Sean Hemmerle
"Perkin’s Park, Akron, Ohio, USA, 2023" photograph from HOOPS series

2023

About the Item

35" x 42" fine art photograph, hand signed by the artist. This color photograph depicts a basketball court in Perkins Park in Akron, Ohio. This basketball court, currently with it's red surface covered by tire tracks from car burnouts is the court where LeBron James grew up playing basketball. Presented unframed. This photograph is from the series, "HOOPS" featured at the Front Room Gallery in New York. In “HOOPS,” Hemmerle takes a look at the cultural phenomenon and spread of the American sport of basketball to all corners of the globe. Hemmerle’s photographic portraits of basketball courts document sites in over 14 countries in North America, Central America, Asia, Europe and Africa. In these times of global strife and turmoil, Hemmerle’s “HOOPS” series emerges as a poignant testament to the enduring power of a simple sport that originated in Springfield, Massachusetts. Against the backdrop of worldwide challenges, the project illuminates the universal appeal of basketball, transcending the barriers of language, religion, and geopolitical divides. Hemmerle’s lens captures the essence of a game that speaks a universal language of camaraderie, resilience, and unity, offering a visual narrative that resonates with audiences irrespective of their cultural or linguistic background. The exhibition “HOOPS” features 24 photographs from the USA, The Netherlands, Iraq, Lebanon, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Palestine, Iceland, Mexico, Cyprus, France, China, Morocco and more. Some of the photos are of historically important locations to basketball, such as the backboard in Springfield, MA, the birthplace of basketball. In the photograph “Springfield College, Springfield, MA, USA 2023” a nondescript rectangular backboard stands stoically on a cracked, beat up blacktop surrounded by a wall of pine trees, their branches forming a natural enclosure that provides a stark contrast to the man-made structure. Other locations are in places not traditionally thought of to be havens for basketball. Hemmerle’s first solo exhibition at Front Room was “Three Generations of High Explosives’ in Brooklyn, in the spring of 2002. Since then Hemmerle has had multiple solo and group shows at Front Room including the popular “Secret Collaborators,”“When Lines are Drawn,” “Rust Belt,” and “Brutal Legacy.” Hemmerle has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work can be found in public and private collections including: the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center for Photography, Martin Margulies, Elton John, Houston Fine Arts Museum, Saatchi London, and Brooks Brothers. His images have been featured in major publications, including Metropolis, Time and The New York Times Magazine.

Nike Bunker 30"x40" limited edition photograph
By Phillip Buehler
Located in New York, NY
30"x40" photograph, signed and editioned on reverse. (edition of 5) Please inquire about framing options. This photograph is from a series entitled, “(UN)THINKABLE,” the culmination of 25 years of Phillip Buehler’s work photographing remnants of the Cold War throughout the United States and Europe. Buehler has visited NATO airbases, Cape Canaveral, the Airplane Graveyard, missile bunkers and silos (even within New York City’s borders) among many other sites that are historic, and yet hidden, forbidden, and forgotten. Photographs from this series will be featured in a solo exhibition this September at the Front Room Gallery. For anyone growing up during the Cold War the sense of dread of the world’s annihilation was all to concrete. It was evidenced in films like “Dr. Strangelove” and “The Day After.” Everyone knew the U.S. had enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 5 times over, and assumed something similar about the Russians. For those not old enough to remember this built in fear, don’t worry (worry) it is reawakening. We don’t need another Cuban Missile Crisis to push us to the brink, the renewed tension with the Russians, and now North Korea’s recent entry in the nuclear weapons club is more than enough to unnerve anyone who is watching these conflicts unfold. Phillip Buehler is watching closely. Through this comprehensive series Buehler’s photos show many aspects of this non-war war. In Buehler’s aerial photographs from a military airplane storage yard in Arizona the repetition of the same model of bomber aircraft are so abstractly pattern-based that the overall effect beginnings to feel like a Middle Eastern tapestry...

84 Huts (Beatles Ashram-Rishikesh, India) 30"x40" large format photograph (ed.5)
By Sasha Bezzubov and Jessica Sucher
Located in New York, NY
30"x40" limited edition of 5 signed by the artists on reverse (available unframed - please inquire about framing options). This photograph is taken with a large format camera, capturing immense detail in the verdant green landscape and what remains of The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram's stone huts which have been overtaken by the jungle. These meditation huts are located north of the Indian city of Rishikesh- this is the site of the Beatles Ashram, also known as Chaurasi Kutia. The collaborative artist team of Sasha Bezzubov and Jessica Sucher worked on this project, "The Searchers" and captured this stunning photograph prior to the location being reopened to the public. The Searchers is a series of large-scale photographs examining Western spiritual tourism in India. Bezzubov and Sucher investigate the magnetic pull of India’s rich religious history and the utopian communities that cater to Western seekers. While exploring yoga centers, meditation retreats and ashrams, the artists straddle the line between observers and participants. The project results in distinct groupings: spatially astounding interiors, bizarre landscapes, and portraits of those who simultaneously appear both lost and found. The connecting thread is the visual strangeness and cultural collisions inherent in this phenomenon. This series includes photographs taken at the Osho Meditation Resort in Pune and the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram in Nayyar Dam, Kerala. With The Searchers, the artists build on themes explored in their previous bodies of work, specifically Expats and Natives (Bezzubov and Sucher) and The Gringo Project (Bezzubov). These previous projects center around young Western travelers...
