About the Item

Seba KURTIS (*1974, Argentina) Smoke rises from shelled buildings in Douma, Syria, from the series 'Chemical Reaction', 2022 Lambda C-Type print on 3mm aluminium Sheet 61 x 91.4 cm (24 x 36 in.) Edition of 7 Print only Background: More than 40 people were killed on 7 April 2018 in the town of Douma on the outskirts of Damascus. The town was at the time held by rebels but besieged by pro-government forces. Civilians claimed they were the victims of a chemical weapon attack. The assault prompted reprisal missile strikes on Syrian government targets by the US, Britain and France a week later, one of the few direct strikes on Syrian government assets in the nine-year civil war. About the artist: Seba Kurtis was born in Argentina in 1974. He studied journalism in Buenos Aires before leaving the country for Europe in the wake of the political and economic crisis of 2001. Several years spent as an illegal immigrant have informed much of his work, which explores the personal, social and cultural impact of irregular migration. Kurtis' work has been exhibited internationally, with solo shows in Europe and the USA, and his first book, Drowned (Here Press, 2011), was selected for the International Photobook Award at the International Photobook Festival, Le Bal, Paris, 2012. Kif (Here Press, 2013) is his second publication and was exhibited with solo shows at Withward gallery in London and in Manchester Photographic Gallery. Today Kurtis lives and works in Manchester. "His photography is the sensitive extension of his robust nomad’s body with its magnanimous aura. It serves him as a performative means to talk about the world and to establish connections between world history and the individual story of his life in a sophisticated manner. As an artist Seba Kurtis is constantly on the move and is unconcerned by physical or aesthetic limits. He is among those who know that photography does not represent reality but that it is able to reveal its ruggedness, complexity and – above all – its inexhaustible poetry." – Stefano Stoll, Director of the Festival IMAGES in Vevey. – Art, Contemporary, Colour, Photography, Fine Art, Chemical Reaction, Acid, Human, Attack, Teheran

Stéphane COUTURIER (*1957, France) Alger – Bab El Oued – Melting Point n°2, 2015 C-print in Artist's frame 180 x 152 cm (70 7/8 x 59 7/8 in.) Edition of 5; Ed. no. 2/5 Framed Born in 1957 in Neuilly sur Seine, Stéphane Couturier currently lives and works in Paris. In 1994, Stéphane Couturier showed his first works in a series called 'Urban Archaeology', viewing the city as a living organism with multiple aspects. He photographed it deliberately avoiding anything that suggested poetry, nostalgia or strangeness. From 1999 on, Stéphane Couturier was increasingly drawn to suburbs and began to focus on a different type of landscape: on the one hand, by tackling housing blocks and high-rises in his 'Monuments' series; on the other, by photographing mushrooming housing developments. These generic cities soon became his favorite subject. – Alger In his latest series, which was created over a period of more than three years, Stéphane Couturier explores, in highly aesthetic and, at the same time, socially ambitious photos and videos, the ‘Climat de France’ housing project – today called Oued Koriche – in Algiers. Built in the International Style in the 1950s and based on a design by French architect Fernand Pouillon...
