His colleagues, with assumed schoolboy humor, nicknamed him Vador, when he is neither naughty or nasty. On the contrary ; Stefan has all of those legendary pilots, Saint Exupéry, Guynemer or Mermoz, who were not content to carry out their military missions but who discovered “up there” a magical world that they wanted to share with us. The fighter pilot is this policeman from the sky who protects “those below”, the Earthlings, us, against all the threats that may come from above; he patrols, constantly on the lookout for the “hostile” who would like to surprise us. But until the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the current state of great vigilance, Stefan's work was more that of a good-natured policeman, sometimes pedagogue with the offenders in good faith, these small private planes which got a little lost, sometimes very firm with those who wanted to fly over protected sites. This gave him time to discover in all its dimensions this universe that we earthlings only see from below, the world of clouds. Where air and water unite to mock the sun, make it disappear from our view or play with its rays to give them the crazy colors and majestic effects that the Flemish painters of the Renaissance so well done. Armed with his camera, Stefan wanted to share with us the incredible ephemeral beauty of this impalpable universe, higher than Earth, lower than Space, where airliners take long detours to avoid them but where the fighter planes, like felines on the lookout, move and hide before swooping down on their prey. Emeritus pilot, aerobatic virtuoso, instructor sought after by young recruits, through the photos he presents to us today, Stefan also demonstrates his sensitivity, his artistic dimension, his poetic vision. And its commitment to the preservation of nature. Because on the fragile balance of these clouds, even if sometimes they deliver us raindrops which we would have done well without, all life on Earth depends. From the inside, making us privileged observers, Stefan Darte reveals the beauty and complexity of these few kilometers that are just above our heads. An initiatory and precious journey.

    By Sophia Milligan

'Sombras Doradas (2)' Limited edition archival photograph. Unframed, hand signed and numbered _________________ Shadows painted on the finca wall: low December sun, golden, luminous, casting soft silhouettes through the aperture of the Eucalyptus leaves. Sophia's poetic photographs are an exploration of the balance in all things: in the sensual interplay of light and shadow; in wild raw energy and serene stillness; in the enduring and the effervescent. They are a contemplation of the awareness that everything in existence is temporary, they speak of the ephemeral nature of all things. Moments, feelings, experiences cherished and appreciated in their impermanence, for that is where the beauty comes from. 'I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within... tangible traces, evidence left behind, records; process in action, stilled'. 40 x 60 inches Limited edition of 25 Archival Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® paper, one of the most beautiful and high quality art papers available. 22" x 17" edition of 7 + 2 AP $1,400 unframed 36" x 24" edition of 7 + 2 AP $2,800 unframed Combining the documentary style of my previous climate project, The Witness Tree, with my earlier narrative fictional approach, I photograph paper cutouts (from appropriated online images) of climate-threatened birds. I place the cutouts within the birds’ current habitats so that they look real, but upon inspection, reveal themselves to be photos within photos—the gaze within the gaze upon nature—as actual birds recede into marginal zones of survival. The images are meant to disrupt the casual gaze, disarming the expectations of nature photography, leaving viewers disturbed and curious. Divergence of Birds (2017-current) A large-scale, long-term, multimedia conceptual project about the threat of species extinction on birds in North America . My current climate project, Divergence of Birds, takes inspiration from two texts: The Audubon Society’s “Birds and Climate Change Report” which projects that, by 2080, climate change will affect the range of habitat of over half of North American birds; and Phillip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” where electric versions of once-commonplace animals are so realistic that they fool even veterinarians. Divergence of Birds addresses the prospect that, one day, only simulacra of climate-impacted animals will be left. Combining the documentary style of my previous climate project, The Witness Tree, with my earlier narrative fictional approach, I’m photographing paper cutouts (from appropriated online photos) of the nearly 400 climate-threatened birds. I place the cutouts within the birds’ current habitats so that they look real, but upon inspection, reveal themselves to be photos within photos—the gaze within the gaze upon nature—as actual birds recede into marginal zones of survival. The images disrupt the casual gaze, disarming expectations of nature photography leaving viewers disturbed and questioning. Audiences will then be invited, through interactive workshops, to participate in climate activism. The full project when completed will include over 400 photos representing the climate-threatened birds, video, soundscape, "memento mori" images in vintage photo cases...
