This photograph is from Stephen Mallon's series: "The Reefing of USS Radford." which charts the final stages of the decommissioned US. Navy Spruance-class Destroyer's life and the destructive beauty of preparing it for reefing. Stephen Mallon's photographs chronicle and examine recycling processes in the U.S. and globally. This series holds optimism in the innovation of salvaging techniques, showing the possible gains that can be made as industrial waste is revivified.
Mallon has gained international attention for his project “American Reclamation” which includes the series “Next Stop Atlantic” focusing on decommissioned NYC subway cars that were reefed in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as “Brace For Impact, The Aftermath of Flight 1549” famously known as the “Miracle on the Hudson” in which Captain “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed and airbus in the Hudson river saving the lives of all the crew and passengers of the plane.
His works have been seen in such publications as National Geographic, The New Yorker, New York Times, Vanity Fair, Wired, CNN, MSNBC, Stern, PetaPixel, Viral Forest, BuzzFeed, New York Magazine, The Huffington Post, CBS, and NPR. Stephen Mallon’s photographs have been exhibited at such venues The Brooklyn Public Library, The Visual Arts Center of New Jersery, The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Mass Art, Webster University, the Waterfront Museum in Brooklyn, NY. and are in numerous important international collections.

Stephen Mallon
Stephen Mallon is a photographer and filmmaker who specializes in the industrial-scale creations of mankind at unusual moments of their life cycles.
Mallon is well known for his series "Next Stop Atlantic," featuring decommissioned NYC subway cars as they are retired in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean as artificial reefs, as well as his series "Brace for Impact," which chronicles the reclamation of the plane which was successfully landed in the waters of the Hudson River by Captain "Sully" Sullenberger.
Mallon’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally and his work has been written about in many publications, including National Geographic, The New Yorker, New York Times, Vanity Fair, Wired, Stern, PetaPixel, Viral Forest, BuzzFeed, New York Magazine and The Huffington Post. Mallon’s work has also been featured on CNN, CBS, MSNBC and NPR. Mallon lives in New York with his wife and daughter.
