David Stoecklein
July 11, 1949 - Nov. 10, 2014
David Stoecklein launched his photography career by taking lifestyle shots of skiing, fishing, hiking, and biking, landing assignments for companies such as Coca-Cola, Ski Magazine, L.L. Bean, Reebok, Timberland, and Scientific Angler. It was not long, however, before he turned his lens to his neighbors on the great ranches of the West.
David’s fascination with the ranching heritage of the American West led him to befriend, and subsequently photograph, the men and women still breathing life into the mythical figure of the cowboy. David’s passion for preserving the traditions and beliefs of the country’s honest, hard-working cowboys and cowgirls gradually earned him their respect. With that respect came an open invitation to share in their lives through his photography.
David’s personal mission soon led to more assignment’s for companies including Stetson-Roper USA, Wrangler, Intervet, Agri Beef, Vogt Silversmiths, Grasshopper-Keds, Farnam, JanSport, Merial, Eddie Bauer, Nestlé, Platinum Performance, Ariat International, Chevrolet, Jeep, Daimler-Chrysler, Marlboro, Kodak, U.S. Tobacco, Ford, Budweiser, Remington and others. His current client list includes Dos Equis, Bayer Animal Health, Idaho Potato Council, Columbia Sportswear, Ryan Michael, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Canon USA, Sony Pictures, Justin Boots, 20th Century Fox, United Artists, and more.
David contributed and worked closely with publications such as; Western Horseman, Farm and Ranch Magazine, Cowboys and Indians, Working Ranch magazine, Orvis, Outdoor Photographer, Digital Photographer, Big Sky Journal and many more. Dave’s original photographs reside in many personal collections as well as museums and galleries around the world.
David Stoecklein is one of the “Accomplished Master Photographers” in Canon’s “Explorers of Light” education and inspiration program. In his lifetime, he has been recognized by the editors of True West magazine as the “Best Living Photographer of the West,” four years in a row. The distinguished award is given each year as part of the magazine’s “Best of the West” issue.

"Sunlight dances across canyon walls, slowly working its way across the valley. Spurs sing in the quiet morning breeze as they jingle along with the rhythm of horse hooves trotting across the land. Cows weave in and out of Mesquite as they march on. The distant sound of cowboys whistling and hollering out while gathering the herd draws closer with every passing minute. Before long, an orchestra of bellows fills the air as the herd is sorted into the pens. The morning is no longer still. Soon after we are met with a beautiful dance composed of cowboys dragging, branding, castrating, and vaccinating calves. The smell of burnt hair fills your nostrils. Dust finds its way into our lungs. Blood mixes in with dirt, completely saturating our boots. High noon brings sweat-soaked hats while the sun burns our skin. There is no shade out here to find rest. The day continues until hundreds of calves have been worked and we're provided with lunch. This photo is a multiple exposure of over sixteen images all shot on the same film frame during branding at the Bell Ranch...
