About the Item

The House of Orange, Color Portrait of a Mother and Baby Orangutan in the Jungle, photographed by David Yarrow. All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. David Yarrow explains his creative process as follows: "This photograph came at a cost—I returned to base utterly filthy. I’ve come back to London or Los Angeles plenty of times with gear that reeks and clothes that end up in the bin, but Borneo easily takes gold for wrecking my wardrobe. The jungle is not my natural habitat—the heat is relentless, the humidity draining—but on this day, in the scorched forests of southern Borneo, every discomfort was worth it. These images have clearly struck a chord, helping to raise much-needed awareness about the vulnerable state of the orangutan. There's something hauntingly human about this mother—more human, in fact, than a few Scots I know. She and her baby were a joy to work with compared to the dominant male, and seemed surprisingly at ease with our presence. I instinctively reached for my trusted 58mm lens, aiming to capture as much facial detail and intimacy as possible. The real challenge? I needed to be in the water—close, low, and unthreatening. Not so easy for someone my size these days. And it was risky. On the journey upriver, I’d spotted several crocodiles, and crocs terrify me. They could’ve been anywhere, lurking in the reeds. So we improvised: two motorboats positioned in a V-shape to create a buffer behind and beside me. Only later did my guide confess—grinning mischievously—that there had been a recent crocodile attack in the same area. He’d kept that detail to himself, fearing I’d back out if I knew. Smart play. No shot, no bonus. And in the end, the shot made the gamble worth it." David Yarrow is a British fine art photographer and one of the world's most spectacular and best-selling nature photographers. Visual storytelling is his craft, and large-format monochrome prints are his medium. Through elaborately staged settings, Yarrow conjures the magic of the great American history, from the Wild West to Route 66. In his wildlife photography, he captures the planet's beauty. Majestic lions, sleek panthers, and free-roaming buffalo populate his works, trumped only by the female bombshells Yarrow places beside them. While highlighting the untamed side of supermodels such as Cara Delevingne or Cindy Crawford, Yarrow portrays the wild beasts in the most human way possible.

"Another memorable moment from a charred forest in Southern Borneo. There is no doubt that these images have made quite an impression and are raising awareness of the plight of the orangutan. She looks more human than a number of Scots I know. This mother and child were much easier to work with than the big male. She seemed largely comfortable with our presence. My instinct was to work with my “go to” 58mm lens and set the camera for as much detail as possible. The trick was to be in the water and to make myself look small and unthreatening (harder now than it once was!). But I needed some protection because on the way up river we had noticed several crocodiles and I am terrified of crocs. They could have been anywhere, skulking in the water reeds, but after some manoeuvring, the two motor boats formed a V shape and blocked off the water behind and to the left and right of me. It was only later that our lead guide told me, with a mischievous grin, that there had been a recent crocodile attack...
