ABOUT:
Inside the gallery, the viewer is surrounded by an arresting display of glamour in the wild. Drawing inspiration from classical paintings and geometric forms, Greg Lotus' work has been compared to Herb Ritts, Man Ray and Richard Avedon, and his exhibition fuses his high fashion background with the rural environment of his youth. Yet Lotus admits to no formal training throughout his career, "I'm completely self-taught, lots of trial and error over the years."
His foray into fashion photography was a twist of fate. In the 90s he was sharing living quarters with young models, and began photographing them to help them build their portfolios—work that eventually brought his work to the attention of agencies. When it comes to his own models, Lotus prefers the "unspoiled" types, holding castings to find those with quirk as well as beauty.
"Over time, most artists develop their own palette and look using color and light in a very personal way. I express my own aesthetic sense which is what makes my work recognizable, regardless of subject or setting." "Swimmer Cap," is an example of Lotus' signature pop of color. Here, a cast of sinewy models convene in a locker room; their candy-colored swim caps give the piece its surreal, dreamlike quality.
In the invitation piece, "Nurses" beauties in black bathing suits pop against a light background while being hosed down by a nurse. "You can almost feel the spray and hear the whoosh under the miniskirt," says Lotus. Besides the visual play on light and dark, he says water is the linking element that turns the piece theatrical and makes it breathe.
Greg Lotus was born in 1967 in rural West Virginia. He shot in Paris and New York City before settling in Miami to pursue his craft. After landing his first major job in Europe, Lotus interviewed with the editor of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani, which led to a 10-page assignment and the launch of his burgeoning career in fashion and advertising photography. Appearing regularly in the pages of Italian Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, and W, Lotus is inarguably one of publishing's most in-demand talents. Over his 20+ years in the business, he's shot dozens of celebrities ranging from Penelope Cruz to Mary J. Blige. His advertising roster is equally impressive, which includes campaigns for L'Oréal, Escada, Swarovski and Cartier.

Greg Lotus
Photographer Greg Lotus' work can be found regularly in the pages of "Italian Vogue," "Vanity Fair," "GQ," "L'Uomo Vogue," and "W" magazine. Aside from his editorial work for major American and European publications, Lotus has shot advertising campaigns for Escada, L'Oreal, Swarovski, Cartier, Levi's, Neiman Marcus and Van Cleef & Arpels. His celebrity portfolio is equally extensive, including Penelope Cruz, Katy Perry, Kate Beckinsale, Megan Fox, Channing Tatum, Liam Hemsworth, Rose Byrne, Lisa Marie Presley, Milla Jovovich, Eva Longoria, Anna Kendrick, Pierce Brosnan, Monica Bellucci, Heather Graham, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Kim Kardashian, Chris Brown, William Levy, Paris Hilton, Dita Von Teese, Mary J. Blige, Paulina Rubio, Gus Van Sant, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Hurley, Jane Lynch, Juanes, Chloe Sevigny and Isabelle Adjani among others. Drawing inspiration from classical paintings and a wide array of sources and life experiences, Lotus reinterprets in his own evocative way the use of light and shadow, playing with angles and composition to enhance the graphic quality of his images. Nature is a recurrent motif in his photography, a clear echo of his childhood. Lotus often mixes high fashion with rural or wild surroundings and includes exotic animals in his compositions, using elements that link the rarefied atmosphere of the fashion industry to the organic beauty of the natural world. In 2017, his black and white work was the subject of a monograph, "Shadows & Light" by Gatehouse Publishing.

ABOUT:
For the last two years Mark and Kristen have collaborated using one of the earliest photographic methods, collodion wet plate to create ambrotypes on glass and tintypes on aluminum. They use a 1860 style view camera to create one-of-a-kind images, which become windows into an intimate, romantic, and beautiful world of faces, still lives, nudes, and landscapes. In this demanding process, the collodion coated tin or glass plates are immersed in a silver nitrate solution, and then they must be exposed in the camera and developed while still wet. Serendipitous flaws and beautiful imperfections are an inevitable part of this imprecise hands-on process.
This show includes a combination of 24 tintypes and ambrotypes, which are 8x10 and smaller in size. Their intimate sizes ask the viewers to look closer and spend more time with these photographs to fully appreciate their power. — A welcome antidote to today's nonstop, ¬instantaneous imagery. Paradoxically, this intersection of past and present gives these pieces an unmistakably contemporary feel. The two collaborators deliberately play up the ambiguity of time.
The nudes (some recalling E.J. Bellocq's alluring portraits of New Orleans prostitutes in 1912) are suffused with freshness and sensuality, even eroticism at times, with nearly all of them coming off as refined rather than crass.
Fredrick Scott Archer developed the collodion process in 1851. Artists such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, William Henry Jackson and Civil War photographer Mathew Brady...
