About the Item

Signed, titled, & dated in pencil on print verso; Embossed with artist's signature on recto Paper 11 x 14 inches; Image 9 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches Horst P. Horst was one of the leading figures of 20th century fashion photography. Horst began his photography career in 1931 working for Paris Vogue. Shortly after he succeeded his friend and mentor, George Hoyningen-Huene, as head photographer of Vogue's photo studios. It was during the interwar years that Horst established his trademark style, which incorporated dramatic lighting and an unparalleled eye for grace that enabled Horst to create images that portray his subjects as emblems of elegance. In this black-and-white platinum print, Horst captured two women, resting on the ground and the other kneeling beside her. They are clothed in simple white garments, which beautifully contrast their dark lips and hair. Both women emanate an undeniable sense of elegance and leisure. Horst’s experimentation with radical composition and the female form engulfed his work with an air of mystery, allowing his photographs to beautifully transport viewers into an aspirational world.
