At the very end of the afternoon, a very violent and lasting tornado of EF-4 intensity evolved under the bases of a particularly vigorous supercell. Here she is at the height of her power.
Chapman, Kansas, on a warm day in May 2016, as the sun was setting. An excessively violent supercell formed in a very unstable atmospheric environment. Beneath its bases, a powerful tornado known as a “wedge” was formed, that is to say, visually, as wide as it was high. On the ground for almost 90 minutes, it is now less than a kilometer away. The rain passes horizontally, the wind pushes the vegetation to the ground, the debris flies in all directions... For a few moments, it is as if the entire world revolved around this immense column of winds...
