“Gates of Lodore, dawn" and "Green River, raft" from Edie Winograde’s series “Sight Seen” observes the experience of iconic yet somewhat obscure American landscapes. A picturesque view of the Green River in Colorado, with a sunrise rose color across the landscape, is paired with a scenic perspective of the river with mountains in the background and rafters setting up along the water's edge.
Human nature, elemental nature and history all collide or coincide in these places and moments. Many people recognize these sites even if they never go to them, because painters, photographers, writers and filmmakers have depicted these landscapes, used them as symbols in their work (of nature, of conquest, of the Sublime, of Manifest Destiny, etc.) and told their stories—in both historical fact and legendary fiction. The Gates of Lodore is the scenic entrance to the Canyon of Lodore, a canyon on the Green River in northwestern Colorado, United States.
Edie Winograde's photographs show the contemporary experience of these iconic sites, though they often recall photographs and paintings that have come before by artists like William Henry Jackson, Edward Curtis, Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt. She is interested in the possibilities for the photograph to convey the present-day visitors’ internalization of these sights (including her own), and the infrastructure in place that packages the view and encapsulates the history.
Edie Winograde developed a passion for photographing her surroundings as a rural Northern Californian teenager, and continues to make photographs (and videos) involving ideas about place and time, especially the almost intangible experience of history in the landscape. She received a MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in New York city, and holds a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz. She currently lives and works in Denver, and teaches photography part-time at the University of Denver. Recent exhibitions include Double Exposure: An Exhibition of Photography and Video at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities and The Reality of Fiction at Redline Art Center in Denver.
Winograde has exhibited her work nationally in museums and art venues including the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Aspen Art Museum, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Center for Photography at Woodstock, Front Room Gallery, Bronx Museum of the Arts, International Center for Photography (ICP) and Artists Space. Awards for her work include an Aaron Siskind Foundation Photographer’s Fellowship and numerous artist’s residencies. Her photographs are in public and private collections including the permanent art collection of the US Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan; the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce photography collection and the permanent photography collection of the Denver Art Museum.
