About the Item
This superb large oil on canvas painting of a river landscape is by British artist William Thomas Wood. Painted in 1950, the river is the Arun near Arundel in Sussex. Wood beautifully catches the light and shadow on the landscape and reflections in the water with delicate grasses in the foreground. Enough to make one want to put on ones walking boots and head for Arundel. Signed William T Wood lower left and dated 1950.
Provenance. Stretcher inscribed William T Wood Sussex Landscape.
Condition. Huge oil on canvas. Image size 50 inches by 40 inches and in good condition.
Housed in a decorative gilt frame. Framed size is 56 inches by 46 inches and in good condition.
William Thomas Wood (1877-1958) was born in Ipswich, the son of the artist Thomas Wood. He studied at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and in Italy and was an official war artist in the Balkans during World War I. He is known for his atmospheric landscapes of Sussex and the Downs and exhibited widely becoming Vice President of the Royal Watercolour Society. Works by him are in many public collections including the Imperial War Museum.
