About the Item
Marilyn Monroe’s status as an enduring figure of glamour made her one of the most famous figures in American history. Of all the images shot of the incomparable movie star, the most iconic were those taken by famed photographer, director and author, Lawrence Schiller. This example is among the best and most famous of his Marilyn tribues, capturing a topless Monroe filming a pool scene for Something’s Got To Give in 1962. The limited edition photograph pays homage to the vivacious and playful spirit of the starlet through the lens of a virtuoso.
Printed from film that was lost for decades, Schiller made only 75 editions of these breathtaking photographs, and none will ever be created again. The silver gelatin print is numbered and signed by Schiller.
“Marilyn was a photographer’s dream subject with her clothes on, and even more stunning with them off. Her wet skin glistened. Her eyes sparkled. Her smile was provocative...As I shot, I was sure that the pictures I was taking were going to be beautiful and unforgettable. The flow of her spine complemented her natural curves as the water reflected the lights, and the whole scene came alive.”
–Lawrence Schiller, “A Splash of Marilyn,” Vanity Fair, June 2012

Lawrence Schiller
The themes of celebrity and scandal anchor much of Lawrence Schiller’s diverse body of work, which spans from photography and nonfiction writing to directing Oscar-winning films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1972). Schiller achieved early success as a photojournalist, publishing photographs of movie stars, athletes, and politicians in magazines and newspapers worldwide. Schiller’s most iconic images capture a nude Marilyn Monroe filming a pool scene for the motion picture Something’s Got to Give, just a few months before her death in 1962. In addition to his memoir Marilyn & Me (2012), Schiller has published eleven books over the course of his career, many with his lifelong collaborator Norman Mailer.

Marilyn Monroe nude in pool, 1962 by Lawrence Schiller

When Lawrence Schiller got the assignment from the French magazine Paris Match to photograph Marilyn Monroe on the 20th century Fox set of Something’s Got To Give, he thought nothing of it. It wasn’t to be a private, studio shoot. He wasn’t going to set up lights, create backgrounds, use a tripod. Just another assignment, he figured. Monroe by then was firmly established as a figment in the imagination of most young men. The orphan Norma Jean had recreated herself as the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe. She’d appeared in twenty-nine films by the time Schiller photographed her in black and white and color in May 1962. The world was unprepared for the moment when Marilyn jumped in the swimming pool in a flesh-colored bikini and came up out of the water au natural. She was all smiles and in her element: the sex goddess...
