Pat Milo
MILO 1960 Vintage 8 Gelatin Silver Photographs of male physique model John Haley

1960s

About the Item

Original vintage early 1960s set of 8 gelatin silver photographs by Physique Photographer Pat Milo of model John Haley. Haley was a very popular physique model of the late 1950 and 1960s. All photographs are stamped "MILO 601 S. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles 5, Calif." on verso. Photographs are original early 1960s prints on heavy paper with a medium gloss premium finish in very good condition, see accompanying images. Pat Milo (James Patrick) was born in 1911 into a large, Irish Catholic family. He was thrown out of the house when his father discovered that he was photographing of other young men. In the early 1950s Milo met Lyle Frisby when working as a short order cook. Together, they opened a photography studio which soon failed. Following the advise of photographer Bruce Bellas (Bruce of Los Angeles) Milo and Frisby moved to Los Angeles in 1953 and opened a studio on Naud Street. In addition to commercial photography they photographed athletic male models for the physique magazines. An early advertisement is found in the December 1953 issue of Physique Pictorial. Frisby was arrested and incarcerated for obscenity in 1956. He experienced a rapid decline in his health due to brutality during the year-long incarceration thus, he died shortly after his release. During Frisby’s incarceration, Milo began taking photography classes at the University of California where he met Hollywood photographer George Hurrell. Milo was greatly influenced by Hurrell’s technical and artistic expertise. Milo opened a studio on Vermont Street in Los Angeles and began photographing male models under the Milo label. His photographs first appeared in physique magazines in 1959. Milo shot dozens of models over the next 10 years. He is perhaps best-known for his photographs of competitive bodybuilder Larry Scott. Photographs measure 4" x 5" inches and are printed without a boarder. All 8 photographs were together in a storage box previously owned by the late Broadway and Hollywood costume designer Noel Taylor.

Unique Framed Signed and dated on verso This photograph is part of the MoMA permanent collection. René Groebli (born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1927) secured his place among the elite of Swiss post-war photographers with his 1949 portfolio MAGIE DER SCHIENE (RAIL MAGIC). In the early fifties Groebli worked as reporter for Life, Picture Post and other international magazines. During the following years he owned a studio for industrial and advertising photography. In 1957 the American Color Annual named him MASTER OF COLOR. In the early 80s Groebli stopped working for advertising and rediscovered for himself the possibilities of expression that black & white photography offers. In 1999 the Zurich Kunsthaus (Art Museum) showed a representative selection of his photographs from the years 1946 to 1996. With NUDES René Groebli gives us a work for sensuous pleasure that had grown over half a century. In the long history of sensual art photography one is hard pressed to find anyone comparable to the Swiss photo...
