RALPH KELLY 1950s Vintage 11 Gelatin Silver Photographs of model BOB CUTLASS

1950s

About the Item

Original Vintage Rare early 1950s set of 11 gelatin silver photographs by Physique Photographer RALPH KELLY of model BOB CUTLASS. Photographs are original 1950s prints on heavy photographic paper with a light textured satin premium finish in excellent condition, see accompanying images. RALPH KELLY is one of the great 'beefcake' photographers of the 1950s. He primarily worked between 1948 and 1958 thus his photographs are rare compared to other physique photographers who worked well into the 1960s. He is greatly underrepresented in the field of male physique photography. Biographical information is difficult to find and original well preserved prints are rare. This is a matching set of 11 poses obviously from the same photo shoot. Kelly worked in Los Angeles where he photographed Tabby Anderson, Bob Gentry, Ray Cox, Joe Tiffenbach, Freddie Shields and many other well known models including our featured model Bob Cutlass. Model Bob Cutlass was exclusive to photographer Ralph Kelly. Photographs measure 3.5 x 4.5 inches and are printed with a 1/16 inch boarder. The image is the standard 4 x 5 inch size often printed with a 3/16 inch boarder. Prints have a light texture that casts some reflection in the re-photographed images shown for display here. The original prints have rich black tones that only original gelatin silver prints offer. This is due to the amount of silver used in the black and white print process in the early and mid 20th Century. All 11 photographs were together in a storage box previously owned by the late Broadway and Hollywood costume designer Noel Taylor.

Unique Framed Signed and dated on verso This photograph is part of the MoMA permanent collection. René Groebli (born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1927) secured his place among the elite of Swiss post-war photographers with his 1949 portfolio MAGIE DER SCHIENE (RAIL MAGIC). In the early fifties Groebli worked as reporter for Life, Picture Post and other international magazines. During the following years he owned a studio for industrial and advertising photography. In 1957 the American Color Annual named him MASTER OF COLOR. In the early 80s Groebli stopped working for advertising and rediscovered for himself the possibilities of expression that black & white photography offers. In 1999 the Zurich Kunsthaus (Art Museum) showed a representative selection of his photographs from the years 1946 to 1996. With NUDES René Groebli gives us a work for sensuous pleasure that had grown over half a century. In the long history of sensual art photography one is hard pressed to find anyone comparable to the Swiss photo...
