About the Item
Willy Ronis (Paris, France, August 14, 1910 - Paris, September 12, 2009) was a French photographer who portrayed post-war Paris and Provence during his lifetime. Ronis' father was a Jewish refugee in Odessa who opened a photography studio in Montmartre and his mother was a refugee from Lithuania who taught piano lessons. Ronis' first interest was in music, dreaming of becoming a composer. Returning from military service in 1932, his violin lessons had to stop because his father was suffering from cancer, which meant that Ronis had to take over the family business. The works of photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Ansel Adams inspired Ronis to begin exploring the world of photography. When his father died in 1949, Ronis closed the studio and joined the Rapho agency, with Ergy Landau, Brassaï, and Robert Doisneau with whom he participated in the photographic group Les XV.
Ronis became the first French photographer to work for LIFE magazine. In 1953, Edward Steichen included Ronis, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau, Izis, and Brassaï in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA entitled Five French Photographers. In 1955, Ronis was included in the exhibition The Family of Man. The Venice Biennale awarded Ronis the gold medal in 1957.

Willy Ronis
Claiming interest in “ordinary people with ordinary lives,” Willy Ronis was among the foremost postwar French photographers, who spent his career roaming the Parisian streets capturing people in love, at work, and at play in lyrical black-and-white images. Like his colleagues Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Brassaï, he was a central figure in the “humanist photography” movement, celebrating the poetry in the everyday in warm, witty images. “I have never sought out the extraordinary or the scoop,” he once said. “The beauty of the ordinary was always the source of my greatest emotions.” Ronis honed his sense of proportion and composition working in his parents’ photography studio. He holds the distinction of being the first French staff photographer for LIFE Magazine, and his work was included in Edward Steichen’s seminal “Five French Photographers” (1951) and “The Family of Man” (1955) exhibitions.

Located in Cologne, DE
From Wikipedia: Woodstock was a music festival held between August 15–18, 1969, which attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music", it was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York, 43 miles (70 km) southwest of Woodstock.
Over the sometimes rainy weekend, 32 acts performed outdoors. It is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history, as well as the definitive nexus for the larger counterculture generation. Rolling Stone listed it as number 19 of the 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.
The event was captured in the Academy Award-winning 1970 documentary film Woodstock, an accompanying soundtrack album, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", which commemorated the event and became a major hit for both Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Matthews Southern Comfort...

George Platt Lynes (1907–1955), was a gregarious American portrait, dance, fashion, and male nude photographer whose career spanned the late 1920s through the early 1950s. From age eighteen, Lynes entered the cosmopolitan world of the American expatriate community in Paris when he became acquainted with the salon of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. He began photographing authors like Stein, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, and Colette and soon established himself as one of the premier fashion photographers in the Condé Nast stable, documenting the ballet companies of George Balanchine/Lincoln Kirstein, and pursuing a private obsession with seductive images of young male nudes rarely published in his lifetime.
Orpheus represents a major 20th Century artistic collaboration between composer Igor Stravinsky, choreographer George Ballanchine, and artist/designer Isamu Naguchi. Orpheus is a thirty-minute neoclassical ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky in collaboration with choreographer George Balanchine in Hollywood, California in 1947. The work was commissioned by Ballet Society, later renamed New York City Ballet, which Balanchine founded with Lincoln Kirstein. Sets and costumes were created by Isamu Noguchi. Noguchi’s lyre harp from the production became the symbol of the New York City Ballet.
Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins in the New York City Ballet created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel...
