Lillian Bassman was born in 1917 to an immigrant family from Russia who settled in Brooklyn, New York. They were open-minded intellectuals, and their daughter was raised free to live her life as an independent woman.
Bassman originally worked as a textile designer and fashion illustrator before joining the esteemed Alexey Brodovitch at Harper’s Bazaar. She soon moved into photography and her work appeared regularly in the magazine throughout the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.
Bassman’s fashion photography is unique, and she achieved the effect seen in her prints through a variety of darkroom techniques including the bleaching of images.

Lillian Bassman
Born 1917, Brooklyn, New York; died 2012, Manhattan, New York. Lillian Bassman became one of the most influential fashion photographers of the 1940s and 50s while working under the tutelage of the legendary art director Alexey Brodovitch at Harper’s Bazaar. Her sense of artistry and movement redefined fashion photography and gave sophistication to what had been a fairly staid medium. In the 1970s she abandoned commercial work but continued to practice photography for the rest of her life. Bassman developed a unique style through her high-contrast black and white images and her dark room techniques in which she would blur and bleach the images, giving them a mysterious, dreamlike quality. In the 1990s she was asked to photograph the Haute Couture collection for The New York Times Magazine, marking her return to fashion photography and the renewed commercial interest in her style. Her art has enjoyed a revival that has placed her squarely at the forefront of the history of fashion art photography. Bassman’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Center for Photography, Woodstock, New York, among others.

Untitled (Guy Mendes) [Boy Dressed as Airplane Pilot]
By Ralph Eugene Meatyard

Vintage gelatin silver print
Signed in black ink, recto
Credit stamped and numbered, verso of mount
This photograph is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City.
An optician by trade, Ralph Eugene Meatyard was a self-described “dedicated amateur” photographer. He pursued his own vision to produce an exquisitely enigmatic, widely admired body of work. Meatyard began taking photographs in 1950, roaming the backwoods and towns in Kentucky, experimenting with framing, multiple exposures, and blurring to produce haunting, abstracted images of natural and manmade environments. In the late 1950s, he began incorporating monstrous, oversized latex masks...

“This image probably owes some of its inspiration to the abnormal characters in the stories of Flannery O’Connor’s 1955 collection, "A Good Man is Hard to Find." But Meatyard was also looking at Giorgio de Chirico and the European Surrealists and here employs their penchant for the lifeless mannequin figure. A headless dressmaker’s dummy...

Romance of Ambrose Bierce #3 [Romance (N.) from Ambrose Bierce #3]

“Meatyard took his definition of romance from The Devil’s Dictionary (1911) compiled by American writer Ambrose Bierce from the satirical pieces he published weekly in the late nineteenth century. The American grotesque of Bierce’s tall tales is here combined with Meatyard’s Surrealist inclinations and the European, particularly French, interest in primitive masks, perhaps with the intention of creating a parody of high art. Rather than sports fans, the stadium benches...
