Lucienne Bloch
Frida in front of the Unfinished Unity Panel, New Workers School, NY

1933

About the Item

This photograph is a black and white portrait of Frida Kahlo in front of the Unfinished Unity Panel at the New Yorkers School in New York, taken by Lucienne Bloch. The medium of this photograph is a silver gelatin print. It has no edition and is signed with black ink on print margin by Lucienne Bloch. The paper size is 14 x 11 inches, and the image size is 12 x 8 inches. “Sanchez told us that the girl Louise (Nevelson), who sticks around Diego, says that Diego ‘likes her very much’. She probably thinks Diego will fall for her seriously - marry her etc. and that she will become the wife of a famous man. But such a stupid woman can’t ever have a real hold on him. Frida is too perfect a person for any one to have the strength to take her place. Then Sanchez told us Diego was having a real affair with that fool Louise. I felt so bad for Frida.” - From the Lucienne Bloch Diaries Lucienne Bloch was a prolific artist. Born in Switzerland, she soon moved with her family to American in mist of the growing tensions of war and anti-Semitism. At the young age of 15 years old, she attended The Cleveland Institute of Art and later in life enrolled in the Ecole National et Superier des Beaux Arts in Paris. Exceeding in her artistic endeavors, she worked for a number of established artist such as sculptor, Anotine Boudelle, and architecture Frank Lloyd Wright. However, it was her encounter with Mexican Muralist, Diego Rivera, and painter Frida Kahlo that solidified Bloch artistic style. Bloch became a closed friend of the couple, as well as, the chief photographer of the Rockefeller Center mural Diego Rivera was working on in New York before it was destroyed. In addition to her photographs, Bloch was a Fresco muralist for the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration from 1934-1939. She continued to teach and work until her death in 1999.
