This modern black and white, still life photograph of white baby lambs peacefully sleeping under a tree was created by Hudson Valley photographer, Jerry Freedner. The resting lambs' white wool coats compliment the frost covered evergreen branches making for a cohesive intimate winter landscape.
Artist Statement:
Jerry Freedner
In the sixties I studied photography at the New School in NYC, and then with Lisette Model. I've enjoyed many workshops and, through the pre-digital age, thousands of hours in my darkroom. As it was then and as it is now, I have an enduring affinity with nature in all of its forms. Within the last ten years my concerns have shifted to the intense fragility of this earth we share. My work is apolitical yet I hope that it might serve as a vehicle to stir a sense stewardship: to conserve the wonder and beauty about us, which is now fraught with unhappy change and threatened loss.

In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of everyday life in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This seaside still life of deep blue and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a concrete surface in front of a cream colored plaster wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects.

Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Thorsten Brinkmann was born in Herne, Germany in 1971. He studied Visual Communication at Kunsthochschule Kassel and Fine Arts at Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg. Brinkmann is known internationally for his unconventional photographic portraits and still lifes, featured recently in T: The New York Times Style Magazine article, “Witty Photos That Play With Centuries-Old Artistic Tradition” (September 2015).
Brinkmann has had solo exhibitions in Belgium, Germany, and Mexico. His work is represented in museums throughout Europe and was included in Beyond Borders, The Fifth Beaufort Triennial, Belgium (2015); and Dress Codes: The Third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video, International Center for Photography, New York (2009). Following his 2012 residency at The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Brinkmann undertook La Hütte Royal, a yearlong installation project of transforming a dilapidated house in the Troy Hill area of Pittsburgh into a permanent artwork.

ABOUT:
The beauty of Tina West’s latest show lies in the maturity and wonder of her still lives. For every photo, West stages her scene with unique treasures from her vast collection. Allowing them to speak to her, rather than the opposite, each object is chosen not because of an image West is trying to recreate from her mind, but because of each object’s sheer attraction.
The sharp subconscious connection West feels to her still life objects comes across strongly. This produces a magical end product that has both transformed and repurposed the photographed objects entirely. Though still lives are considered a classic image, West exemplifies a charming, experimental take that pushes the boundaries of the historical still life.
