Columbia Ice Field / color photography
By Robert Von Sternberg
Located in Burlingame, CA
Climate change, traffic, construction cone dots a landscape of ice in this provocative museum matted Archival Pigment Print - photograph from Robert Von Sternberg who has lived and worked all his life in Los Angeles County, identifying human incursions into the natural world as a recurring theme at the heart of his photographic practice. Von Sternberg is drawn to capturing images of man intruding on nature more than any other and this is the visual thread that runs through the body of his work. Avid travelers, von Sternberg and his wife Patricia are especially fond of road trips, where the photographer delights in the offbeat side of the American touristic tradition. Far from focusing on the most canonical or scenic destinations, the artist seizes on the visual possibilities of overlooked roadside attractions and chance conjunctions. The surreal artificial lighting that illuminates the American nighttime often provides the "definitive photographic images - which sometimes also include the photographer himself. More often, though, von Sternberg captures scenes in which human figures are distant or absent. In this, his decisive moments are very unlike the densely populated ones pictured by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Still, Von Sternberg's roadside moments are crowded despite their ostensible vacancy. Through the roads, fences, signage, buildings, and all the other material structures of civilization, humanity marks the land; even in our bodily absence, we make our presence insistently known. Image captured digitally. Von Sternberg prints his own images on a 3880 Epson professional printer using archival Epson Ultrachrome pigment inks. Moab Juniper Baryta cotton rag paper stock, which is archival / 100 yrs. Papers are 13 x 19 inches. Outer dimension of the museum matting: 17 ½ x 23 ¼ inches. Robert Von Sternberg's photographs are collected worldwide and included in some of the world's most prestigious public and private institutions. 'Columbia Ice Field' is including in the permanent collections of the following Museums. In the series, "Some Other Place" (2000-2002), neighborhood sidewalks, city parks, and forays into the wilderness were reconstructed, but with a darker sensibility than their earlier series. Nix and Gerber’s subdued color palette and increasingly complex compositions also reflect this change. Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber have been making art collaboratively for over sixteen years. Originally from the American Midwest, now based in Brooklyn, they construct meticulously detailed model environments and photograph the results. For the last decade they have found inspiration in their urban surroundings, imagining a future mysteriously devoid of mankind. Their miniature fake landscapes and interiors reflect a love of science fiction and dystopian entertainment (think “Blade Runner,” “Planet of the Apes,” “Logan’s Run...

"A Fine Prospect", limited edition, American Landscape Photograph
Located in New York, NY
30"x40" photograph of created landscape of paper. from the series: "The Hundred- Acre Wood" signed on reverse edition of 5. This photograph depicts the artist's vision of the American landscape, created in paper and then photographed to create this atmospheric image. The limited edition photograph captures a feel of Western United States farming, with a quality of light from the Hudson Valley. A union of artistic vision from West Coast to East Coast, Ken Ragsdale is a master of material construction, light and photographic composition. The installation landscape scene created by Ken Ragsdale exisits only to be photographed. With each scene, the artist meticulously cuts paper and folds each component to be captured by his lens. This photograph of cut paper constructions depicts a bus ride through a forest scene from the artists memory. The hues of ambient amber, green, red and blue are created through lighting the staged scene created in white paper Ken Ragsdale’s process begins with rough sketches of places and things from his past that are relevant to current themes he is considering. This series focuses on a time period of 1974-78, in the regions of Northern Idaho, to Eastern Oregon and the areas between. As his working drawings solidify the dimensions of the objects which represent his memories from that era, Ragsdale considers the landscape, terrain and weather, filtered through his personal memories and experiences.

Once the composition and components are determined as to capture the aura of a memory, schematic drawings are documented and prepared for hand assembly. Laboriously the schematics are cut out, folded and tabbed to create their final 3-dimensional formats. As each object is placed and the structures oriented, Ragsdale modifies the scenes to perfectly frame each scenario for the final photograph. From simple sheets of white Bristol Vellum, the atmosphere and lighting brings each image to life and allows for a reminiscent view of a wistful past. Pacific Northwest native Kenneth Ragsdale’s work, derived from personal memories, involves a mixture of drawing, painting, sculpture, paper-craft, theatre...

The River in the Morning
Located in New York, NY
30"x40" edition of 5, photograph signed by the artist. This photograph depicts a constructed landscape created entirely out of white paper. The quality of light and color are achieved through the staging of the scene the aritst, Ken Ragsdale, creates. A scenic overlook into a vast landscape, with a camper in the foreground of the campsite, creates a dreamlike vision. Far off into the distance what appears almost as a mirage is a ferris wheel form, perhaps from a carnival or fair, or just in imagined. The installation landscape scene created by Ken Ragsdale exisits only to be photographed. With each scene, the artist meticulously cuts paper and folds each component to be captured by his lens. This photograph of cut paper constructions depicts a bus ride through a forest scene from the artists memory.
