CIGAR - Champion Horse Portrait 1997 by the contemporary woman artist and distinguished realist painter Jenness Cortez, is an original hand drawn limited edition lithograph printed using hand lithography techniques on archival paper 100% acid free. CIGAR is a lifelike, realistic equine portrait depicting the superstar thoroughbred racehorse Cigar, who was two-time Horse of the Year winner, a member of the National Racing Hall of Fame, and arguably the greatest racehorse of the 1990s. CIGAR, a visually impressive handmade lithograph, displays an appealing neutral color palette in shades of warm copper brown, grays, and charcoal black on a light slate blue background.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Jenness Cortez is a mid-career artist with astonishing talent. Born 1944 in Indiana, Jenness Cortez began her formal art studies at the age of sixteen under the guidance of noted Dutch painter, Antonius Raemaekers. Cortez further developed her solid fine arts background as a graduate of the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and student of Arnold Blanche at the Art Students League of New York.
Like the great horse painters George Stubbs and Frederic Remington, Jenness Cortez is first and foremost an extraordinary draftsman. Beginning in 1977, and for the next twenty years, she received international acclaim for her sporting paintings and her powerful depictions of the horse. During the mid 1990s, her long-time interest in landscape began to blossom. In the tradition of the 19th century Hudson River and Barbizon School painters, her vision comprehends all of nature as a manifestation of the divine. Cortez's landscape images evoke a certain transcendent quality rarely seen in contemporary realism. Her representations of the phenomenal world are sensitive, passionate and deeply moving.

Jenness Cortez
Jenness Cortez is a distinguished figure in the contemporary revival of classical realist painting. In her work, Cortez plays author, architect, visual journalist, art historian, curator and pundit to help open our eyes to what we might otherwise have overlooked or taken for granted. Each painting presents a specific theme, mixing straightforward cues and obscure illusions, complemented by references to other artists' lives and times. Each of her works touches upon important questions about the nature of painting and the significance of art objects and presents subtle shades of meaning that invite contemplation. Cortez has been exhibiting her work since 1975 and has had more than 40 solo shows throughout the United States. Her work is in numerous public and private collections, including those of President Ronald Reagan, President Bill Clinton, Governor George Pataki, Governor Hugh Carey, Queen Elizabeth II, the New York State Museum, Skidmore College and SUNY Empire State College.
