This original 1893 poster for Chocolat Menier is among the most iconic and beloved images in the history of advertising. Created by French illustrator Firmin Bouisset (1859–1925), it features a young girl—modeled after Bouisset’s own daughter, Yvonne—writing "Chocolat Menier" on a wall with a piece of chocolate. The image radiates charm and innocence, capturing the imagination of generations and becoming an enduring symbol of the brand.
Bouisset, a celebrated painter and poster artist, was known for his depictions of children in commercial art. His work for Menier, along with his designs for other companies like Lefèvre-Utile (LU) and Maggi, helped define the visual language of Belle Époque advertising. This particular poster was printed for the Italian market and shows the name and address of the distributor in Milan.
The Chocolat Menier poster was so successful that it became a central part of the company’s branding, appearing on packaging, promotional items, and even children’s school supplies. It was also featured in the influential Les Maîtres de l’Affiche series, which showcased the finest poster art of the era.
