From 1920 to 1924 Delvaux studied architecture and painting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His early work was influenced by Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, but after discovering the work of Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, and his fellow Belgian René Magritte, Delvaux converted to a Surrealist style in the mid-1930s.
