About the Item

Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Earl Horter was a self-taught artist who began his career working in New York City as a draftsman at an advertising agency. Horter became well known for his etchings, illustrations and paintings, and had his first one-man show in 1916. He also exhibited at the Pan-American Exposition in San Francisco, Art Institute of Chicago, Philadelphia Print Club, and at the Corcoran Biennials from 1935 to 1939. Horter’s work can be found in the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Library of Congress. Horter amassed an important collection of modernist and cubist art, which included works by Picasso, Braque, Duchamp, Brancusi and others, and was an instructor in Philadelphia at the Stella Elkins School of Art, Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art and Graphic Sketch Club.
