Fugi Nakamizo
New York Harbor from the Battery

1925

$900Asking Price

About

Japanese-born Fugi Nakamizo came to New York City in 1910. He studied at the Art Students League and Cooper Union. In 1934 he had a one-man show at the Montross Gallery and later worked on the NYC-WPA. During World War II he was interned at a government camp in Utah. Nakamizo's work is scarce in general and this harbor scene certainly is as well. It is signed in pencil and monogrammed in the plate at the lower left corner. Besides the Battery (Manhattan's southern point), the Statue of Liberty is shown as well as hints of Staten Island at the left. But the harbor is wide open in an 'anything is possible here' kind of way. It's listed as being part of the Ashcan School because of the date and subject, but it could also be 'etching revival' thanks to the atmospheric nature of the scene.
