Notes:
Provenance: private collection - Aspen, CO. Engraved by German artist Johann Carl Richter (1759-c.1832) after a drawing by French artist Jean-Baptiste Hilaire (1751-1828). Comes from a series of etchings with aquatint of various scenes of Mount Vesuvius and other European landscapes, (1797). Printed in one color: brown. "5" inscribed in blue crayon upper left and "3" printed upper right. Our example here has its original rough hand-cut full margins with printed ornamental border as issued. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA together have five examples from this series within their permanent collections.
Located in Kos, Greece, the Tree of Hippocrates is the plane tree under which, according to legend, Hippocrates of Kos taught his pupils the art of medicine. Paul of Tarsus purportedly taught here as well. The Platanus in Kos is an oriental plane, with a crown diameter of about 12 metres, said to be the largest for a plane tree in Europe.
Biography:
Jean-Baptiste Hilaire (or Hilair) (1751–1828) was a French painter. He was born at Audun-le-Tiche in north-east France, the son of Jean-Francois Hiller (Hilaire) and Marie-Calixte Ronfort and enrolled in March 1786 at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. There he was a pupil of the painter Charles-Louis Clérisseau and the painter and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. In 1776, aged 25, he toured the Greek islands and the Orient, creating over a hundred works which he used to illustrate his "Voyagé Pittoresque de la Grèce", published in three volumes in 1782. His talent became recognized and his work exhibited in Paris at such places as the Salon de la Jeunesse in 1780, and at the Salon de la Correspondence the same year. He took part in the official exhibitions of the Louvre in the salon of 1796. He continued painting until 1796 after which he fades from the records. He died in Paris in 1828.

Biography:
Johann Daniel Preissler, or Preisler (1666–1737) was a German painter and director of Nuremberg's Academy of Fine Arts. He was a notable member of a German artistic family, originating in Bohemia. His children included Johann Justin Preissler (1698–1771), Georg Martin Preisler (1700–1754), Barbara Helena Preisler (1707–1758; married to Oeding), Johan Martin Preisler (1715–1794), and Valentin Daniel Preisler (1717–1765), all in their time renowned artists. Most notable for his portraits, nudes and history paintings, Johann Daniel Preissler also produced drawings and frescoes. He was particularly known beyond his native Nuremberg for his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic", a sequence of works on art theory – the individual works were translated into several other languages and served as textbooks for students such as the Swiss Salomon Gessner...
