About the Item
AURORA'S GARLAND is an imaginary architectural landscape that combines the real and the surreal. Created in 1995 by the Iowa born artist Jim Buckels (b.1948) known for his dream-like images, rendered in a meticulous, modern airbrush technique. This limited edition screenprint was printed using hand silk screen printing techniques on heavyweight archival printmaking paper, very fine details superb quality craftsmanship. AURORA'S GARLAND presents the viewer with a dreamlike metaphysical landscape luxuriant with shades of cool blues, dark greens, grays, beige, pink lavender, magenta pink, yellow, off white and black. A peaceful moonlit garden scene accented by two winged cherub statues in the foreground holding onto a glowing lampost. An elegant and fanciful, rose tinted French maison rendered in a Chiâteauesque architectural style, sets the scene as it stands glowing with light beside a mirror-still pool of water, surrounded by a textural stone wall, precisely trimmed hedges, lush leafy trees, and flowering shrubbery. AURORA'S GARLAND creates a fairytale ambience reminiscent of the magical works of the renowned 1920's illustrator Maxfield Parrish.

Artist statement -
"On one level, I think of myself as a decorative artisan, or at best a scene painter. I don't mind this distinction, because many of my heroes never achieved much more. It's a modest but honorable aspiration. The artists who have influenced me are quite dissimilar and usually less prominent in the pantheon of art history: Canaletto, the Flemish scene painters, the Hudson River artists like John Frederick Kensett, the Pre-Raphaelites like Edward Byrne-Jones, the Symbolists like Arnold Bocklin, the Surrealists like Magritte, and so on. Of course, I love the great masters from all periods, but I have a special affinity for the more obscure artist who had the gift for being able to coax you past the frame and transport you to another dimension. I think I actually do this sometimes and if it's all I can ever do, that's enough for me. Isadora Duncan said that all her life she had struggled to make one authentic gesture. I think that's what we all want."
About the artist -
Born and raised in Iowa, Jim Buckels developed an early fascination with fantasy images and faraway places. His mother, a literature professor at Iowa State University, exposed him to storybooks illustrated by N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Howard Pyle. This exposure can be seen in the magical qualities of his paintings and prints. They seem to offer the viewer an opportunity to enter into a storybook, fantastical realm.
Buckels attended the University of Northern Iowa on a Fine Arts scholarship, but interrupted his education to enlist in the army. Returning from a tour in Vietnam three years later, Buckels resumed his education and finished a bachelor's degree in art. He later worked as a free lance illustrator, reminiscent in style to regional artists such as Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton.
Buckels is best known for his visionary lines and skewed perspective, which creates an inner world of both real and imaginary locales. In his work he exhibits the influences of the primitive dreamscapes of Henri Rousseau. It has been noted of Buckels that his pictures "tell stories that linger in memory long after one has viewed them, hinting at truths that lie just below the surface of the seen world." As a contemporary artist working in his own faintly deco/1990's style, Buckels continues to enthrall viewers and recruit voyagers into his magical realm.
Jim Buckels Artwork is done in several forms. His originals are mainly done with an airbrush. He also does limited edition serigraphs on paper and canvas, and Buckels does serigraphs on clayboard which tend to produce the quality of his original air brush paintings.
