About the Item
YELLOW BOAT is an original hand drawn lithograph by the Egyptian French artist Laurent Marcel Salinas printed using hand lithography techniques on archival printmaking paper 100% acid free. YELLOW BOAT depicts a beached yellow sailboat with a male figure standing beside on the right; the composition drawn in a simple, painterly manner with dab-like strokes in complementary tones of turquoise blue, warm yellow, browns, greens and touches of black and white. Salinas' YELLOW BOAT is an eye-appealing handmade lithograph presenting a classic waterside boat scene with a modern flair.

Marcel Charles Laurent Salinas 'Marcel Salinas': Born in Egypt, Marcel Charles Laurent Salinas was the son of a French mother and an Italian father. Art was not his first vocation. Salinas studied law in France and practiced this profession for more than a decade. He received his law degree from the University of Aix-en-Provence. While there, he meticulously studied the works of that area's most famous artist, Paul Cezanne. Around 1945 Marcel Salinas abandoned the bar and became a full time artist in Paris. There he studied under the painter and art theorist, Andre Lhote (1885-1962). Shortly thereafter he began exhibiting his art at the Salon des Surindependants, and elsewhere in Paris. In 1955 Marcel Salinas was introduced to lithography and began working as a lithographic printer. Within several years he was considered to be one of the finest printers in Paris and many famous contemporary artists sought his skill and advice.
In 1969 Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) asked Salinas to create several lithographs based upon his "Imaginary Portraits" paintings. Picasso was not looking for 'copies' of his portraits but rather for new interpretations of them. For the following three years the two artists worked closely together, creating twenty-nine "Imaginary Portraits" in lithography.
Marcel Salinas moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1995. Two years later a major retrospective of his paintings, drawings and prints was held in that city at the 20th Century Masters Gallery. Previous one man exhibitions had taken place in Paris, New York, Alexandria and Copenhagen. Marcel Salinas also served as artist-in-residence at the Foundation Francois Desnoyer, France, and at the Paule Mikkelsen Minde Karslov, Denmark.

Laurent Marcel Salinas
Laurent Marcel Salinas was born in 1913 in Alexandria of a French mother and an Italian father. Salinas spent his early adult years between France and Egypt. He exhibited frequently at the Alexandria Atelier alongside Egyptian artists such as Mahmud Said and Muhammad magi. Following the 1952 revolution and the Suez Canal crisis, life became increasingly difficult for foreigners residing in Egypt, many were expelled and their assets seized. Marcel's mother and step-father, like many others, left the country. Among the possessions they lost were many of Marcel's early paintings. In the late 1950's, exiled in Paris and desparate for money, Salinas got a job in a lithography workshop. He rapidly became an expert. In 1969 he began work on a lithographic rendition of Picasso's 29 Portraits Imaginaries for the Editions Cercle d'Art that would receive the master's whole-hearted approval, making Salinas' name the only one ever to appear side by side with Picasso's. Salinas continued to paint throughout the last decades of his life, spent between Paris and New York, and between Brussels and St Louis. His prolific output as a painter falls mostly into three categories: landscapes, nudes, and still-lives. While he toyed at various times in his life with different stylistic paradigms, including those of cubism and fauvism, ultimately, Salinas’ commitment was to the poetry of light, color, and form as they were brought to bear on the representation of people, places, and objects. Salinas died in 2010.
