Sir Frank Short
A Roman Canal (after the water-colour drawing by Peter De Wint, 1784--1849).

1904

About the Item

6 3/4 x 15 (sheet 15 4/1 x 22).. A fine impression printed in black on chine-appliqué affixed to white wove paper. Housed in a 21 x 27 1/2-inch black and silver wood frame. "From a boat on the canal men are loading hay onto a wagon with two horses; cattle, and meadows leading to trees, on the right."; The The Foss Dyke, or Fossdyke, connects the River Trent at Torksey to Lincoln, the county town of Lincolnshire, and may be the oldest canal in England that is still in use. It is usually thought to have been built around 120 AD by the Romans, but there is no consensus among authors. It was refurbished in 1121, during the reign of King Henry I, and responsibility for its maintenance was transferred to the city of Lincoln by King James I. Improvements made in 1671 included a navigable sluice or lock at Torksey, and warehousing and wharves were built at Brayford Pool in the centre of Lincoln. Sir Francis Job "Frank" Short PPRE (19 June 1857 – 22 April 1945) was a British printmaker and teacher of printmaking. He revived the practices of mezzotint and pure aquatint, while expanding the expressive power of line in drypoint etching and engraving. Short also wrote about printmaking to educate a wider public and was President of the Royal Society of Painter Etcher & Engavers (now styled the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) from 1910 to 1938. Short was elected to the Royal Academy in 1911, the same year he was knighted, and served as the R.A.'s Treasurer from 1919-1932. He was also President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Head of the Engraving School of the Royal College of Art, where he taught from 1891-1924. According to his friend and colleague, Martin Hardie: ''Physically strong, with a powerful frame, a massive head, and large and benevolent eyes, Short was a man of quiet manner and kindly impulse, but of firm character and great strength of will.'
