Francesco Clemente
Semen: large scale expressionist nude male figure portrait, floating in pink

1987

About the Item

This large scale, ethereal portrait depicts a tranquil male nude figure floating in pink and blue. Based on a tempera painting, an expressionist, emotive piece to bring dramatic impact to the bedroom or living room. Paper 54 x 90.5 in. / 137 x 230 cm Image 40.75 x 66.25 in. / 103.2 x 168.6 cm Etching, aquatint, dry point and soft ground in colors, with collage in silver, on Fabriano Rosaspina paper. Edition 55 with 15 artist's proofs: this impression 28/55. Signed and numbered by the artist, and stamped 2RC. Based on Clemente's 1983-84 tempera painting of the same name. Published by 2RC Edizioni d’Arte – Rome. One of Francesco Clemente's most ambitious, graphic, and reproduced works, Semen features a simple foreshortened dark brown outline of the naked artist, on an expanse of pinkish-red. A white line attached to an arrowhead defines the side of his head. Soft expanses of yellow and rose fill in the lines of his body, and his lips are tinted red. The composition is bounded by a striking cobalt blue frame. Clemente's painterly, soft mark-making infuses even his most esoteric and erotic subjects with warmth and meaning. The artist has said "Fluidity is the source of the work. Fluidity is the goal of the work." Here this fluidity is literal; he floats towards the viewer as if suspended in a post-coital haze, or perhaps in amniotic fluid. Clemente positions his own body as both creator and created, a duality that the artist frequently employs: symbols of mortality and eternity, femininity and masculinity, fertility and death, positioned side by side. A prodigious producer of paintings, drawing, and prints, Clemente frequently depicts the nude human form, including intimate self-portraits and couples in erotic embrace. Clemente’s visual language combines art-historical reference and ancient mythology with images of nature, imbuing figurative scenes with a dreamy spirituality. Sex, violence, death and birth provide equal inspiration for Clemente’s nomadic soul-searching. Clemente was born in Naples, Italy, and raised surrounded by the images of Greco-Roman myth and the art of Italian masters. At the age of 21, Clemente travelled to India, where he would later move, immersing himself in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Madras. A fixture of the New York art scene since the 1980’s, he has collaborated with authors such as Allen Ginsberg and Alberto Savinio (the brother of Giorgio de Chirico) to produce numerous books, including The Departure of the Argonaut. Clemente divides his time between New York, Rome and India. He has exhibited at Blain Southern Gallery, London and Berlin; James Cohan Shanghai, Daniel Templon, Paris; and Mary Boone, New York. This etching is in the collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Tate, London; and the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas.

Microwave Oven (A Couple in the Sea)
By Colin Self
Located in New York, NY
A contemporary of David Hockney and Peter Blake, Colin Self is an important British printmaker whose innovative etching techniques and novel use of found materials have defined his diverse oeuvre. Yet unlike most artists associated with Pop Art, Self eschewed glossy, colorful bombast for nuanced drawings in a limited palette. Self's imagery has ranged from the geopolitical -- nuclear bombers, fallout shelters; to American icons -- hot dogs, Coca Cola cans; to the everyday -- intimate scenes of animals and plants, and whimsical figure drawings as seen here. The title of this print, Microwave Oven...

Cartas de Japon by Ray Smith surreal Dali esque print Japanese portfolio
By Ray Smith
Located in New York, NY
Ray Smith's aptitude for the surreal is apparent in this portfolio of six drypoint prints, presented in a portfolio case. Each image depicts an intriguing, fantastic landscape populated with chimeric nudes. Each one is carefully printed to appear as if doodled on lined notebook paper with ballpoint pen: Japanese letter paper chine-colle on Kizuki Hosho paper. Translated as "Letters from Japan," Cartas de Japon plays on tropes of an exotic, faraway land. The series of prints perhaps pictures Japan in the imagination of westerners, who for centuries speculated that those from other continents had wildly different bodies and customs. The title may be a reference to iconic Mexican director Carlos Velo's 1973 film Letters from Japan. Cartas del Japon, 1988-89 Portfolio of 6 drypoint prints printed on Japanese letter paper mounted on Kizuki Hosho paper Plate 6 x 7.8 in. Paper 18 x 23.4 in. Ed. 30 with three artist proofs. Printed by Hideharu Mishio, Norimasa Mizutani, and Marie Okada at Woodblock Workshop. Published by AC&T CORPORATION, Tokyo, 1989. Nude with Winter Bouquet - 1970s Modernist Black & White Etching, Signed Print
By Doel Reed
Located in Denver, CO
Nude with Winter Bouquet 11/30 is a vintage aquatint etching by American printmaker Doel Reed (1894-1985), created in 1972. This exquisite work depicts a reclining female figure, elegantly posed alongside a vase of flowers and flowing drapery, capturing the quiet intimacy of the scene. The etching is signed by Reed in the lower right margin and numbered 11 of a limited edition of 30 in the lower left margin. The print is presented in a custom frame with archival materials, with outer dimensions of 20 ½ x 26 ¼ x 1 inches and an image size of 11 ¾ x 17 ¾ inches. This stunning piece is illustrated in Doel Reed: The Graphic Works by Harry B. Cohen and Ann L. Rogers (page 83, plate 124), showcasing Reed's mastery in the aquatint technique. The etching is part of several esteemed collections, including the University of Wyoming, Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, University of Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State University. It has also been exhibited in notable shows, including the 147th National Academy of Design in New York, Indiana Printmakers in 1972, the 32nd Annual Print Show at the Philbrook Museum in 1972, and the 53rd Annual Exhibition of the Society of American Graphic Artists in New York in 1975. About the Artist: Doel Reed’s dedication to printmaking and his unique approach to aquatint solidified his reputation as a master of the medium. Early in his career, Reed became fascinated with Goya's aquatints, which inspired him to teach himself the technique and establish a lifelong passion for creating etched works. Known for his emotionally charged landscapes marked by dramatic tonal contrasts, Reed’s prints evoke a sense of mystery, blending modernist forms with a romantic, moody atmosphere. Born in Indiana and initially studying architecture, Reed’s understanding of structure deeply influenced his artistic style, which he described as architectonic. He later transitioned to fine arts, studying at the Cincinnati Art Academy, but his studies were interrupted by World War I. A gas attack during the war temporarily blinded him, and the lasting effects of the attack led him to seek the dry climates of Oklahoma and New Mexico for relief. After the war, Reed discovered Goya’s aquatints...
