About the Item
This original 1972 Olympic poster by the renowned Austrian Expressionist Oskar Kokoschka was created as part of the official art series for the Munich Olympic Games. Featuring Kokoschka’s signature expressive style, the piece embodies the spirit of athleticism through raw emotion, movement, and energy, diverging from conventional depictions of sports in favor of a deeply human and artistic interpretation.
At the center of the composition, a loosely sketched, elongated male figure emerges in vibrant strokes of red, yellow, blue, and green, his posture slightly slouched, evoking a sense of reflection, exhaustion, or quiet contemplation. The dynamic lines and patches of pastel-like color, applied in a free-flowing manner, convey both the physical exertion of an athlete and the psychological intensity of competition. His facial features are indistinct yet powerful, capturing the transient emotions that accompany the Olympic experience.
The background, an abstract blur of blended colors and textured patches, suggests movement and vitality, reinforcing the painting’s fluid, almost dreamlike quality. Kokoschka, known for his bold use of color and line to express emotion, brings a unique and deeply personal artistic voice to the Munich Olympic series.
The minimal typography at the bottom, reading “Olympische Spiele München 1972,” maintains the clean, modern aesthetic of the Olympic branding, while the iconic Olympic rings and the Munich Games emblem subtly anchor the piece in its historical context.
This poster exemplifies Kokoschka’s lifelong commitment to capturing the human condition, elevating the Olympic athlete beyond mere physicality and into the realm of artistic expression. Unlike more traditional sports posters, this artwork does not glorify victory but rather celebrates the internal and external struggles of human endeavor, making it a profound and timeless addition to the Munich 1972 Olympic Art Series.

Oskar Kokoschka
Oskar Kokoschka (1 March 1886 – 22 February 1980) was an Austrian artist, poet and playwright best known for his intense expressionistic portraits and landscapes. He was second child to Gustav Josef Kokoschka, a Czech goldsmith, and Maria Romana Kokoschka (née Loidl). His older brother died in infancy in 1887; he had a sister, Berta (born in 1889) and a brother, Bohuslav (born in 1892). Oskar had a strong belief in omens, spurred by a story of a fire breaking out in Pöchlarn shortly after his mother gave birth to him. Kokoschka’s life was not easy mainly due to a lack of financial help from his father. They constantly moved into smaller flats, farther and farther from the thriving center of the town. Concluding that his father was inadequate, Kokoschka drew closer to his mother. Among Kokoschka’s early works were gesture drawings of children, which portrayed them as awkward and corpse-like. Kokoschka had no formal training in painting and so approached the medium without regard to the “traditional” or “correct” way to paint. The teachers at Kunstgewerbeschule helped Kokoschka gain opportunities through the Wiener Werkstätte or Viennese Workshops. Kokoschka’s first commissions were postcards and drawings for children. Kokoschka said that it gave him “the basis of [his] artistic training”.[1] His early career was marked by portraits of Viennese celebrities, painted in a nervously animated style. He volunteered for service as a cavalryman in the Austrian army in World War I, and in 1915 was seriously wounded. At the hospital, the doctors decided that he was mentally unstable. Nevertheless, he continued to develop his career as an artist, traveling across Europe and painting the landscape.

View All1984 original poster by Warhol for the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia
By Andy Warhol
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, marked a momentous occasion in Olympic history, and one of the most iconic pieces of memorabilia from this event is Andy Warhol’s striking official poster. Known for his revolutionary pop art style, Warhol was among several renowned artists commissioned to create promotional artwork for the XIV Olympic Winter Games.
Warhol’s silkscreen-inspired poster captures the intensity and movement of a speed skater in full stride. Using bold neon outlines, a vibrant red body suit, and dynamic geometric background elements, the composition conveys a sense of urgency and athleticism. The contrasting colors—deep black, electric green, yellow, and blue—amplify the subject’s momentum, making the skater appear almost weightless against the abstract backdrop.
While Warhol is best known for his depictions of celebrities and consumer goods, this Olympic commission demonstrated his versatility as an artist. His ability to distill movement and expression into a minimalist yet powerful composition makes this piece stand out among other Olympic posters.
This official 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics poster is highly sought after by collectors and Olympic memorabilia enthusiasts alike. As one of Warhol’s few sports-related works, it embodies both his unmistakable artistic style and the spirit of global athletic competition.
