About the Item
This is a self portrait of a young woman who is the wife of the artist.
Francisco Souto was born in Venezuela, and received a BFA from Herron School of Art and a MFA from The Ohio State University.
His honors include more than 45 national and international awards and grants including Special prize at the 7th International Triennial of Prints in Japan, selected prize at the 12th International Biennial of Prints and Drawing in China and the International Award at the British International Print Exhibition.
He has been artist-in-residence in many national and international venues including: Helsinski Academy of Fine Art, Finland; MuseoGrabado, Mexico; University of Texas at Austin; Columbus College of Art and Design, Ohio; and Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Colorado.
His prints and drawings have been published in many catalogs, magazine and books including Drawing Magazine, Printmaking today: International magazine of contemporary graphic art, published in the UK and Printmaking: A complete guide to materials & processes, published by Prentice Hall.
Souto’s work has been exhibited in over 85 venues in the last 10 years including the Fonds d’Art Moderne et Cotemporain, France; New York International Print Fair, Works on paper New York City and The armory Center for the Arts in California.
His work is held in several public and private collections including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, National Taiwan Museum of Art, Sheldon Museum of Art, Blanton Museum of Art, Wichita Museum of Art, The Romania National Museum of Art, the Lakeview Museum of Art and Till Richter Museum of Contemporary art, Germany.
He participated in the exhibition Epicenter/Epicentro: Re Tracing the Plains, on the occasion of the Venice Biennale 54th International Arts Exhibition in Venice, Italy.
He is currently a Professor in the department of Art & Art History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA.

Francisco Souto
Francisco Souto was born in Venezuela and received his BFA from the Herron School of Art in 2000, and his MFA from Ohio State University in 2002. He has participated in a wide range of national and international exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, Venezuela, Russia, Egypt and Japan. Significant exhibitions include Latin American Contemporary Printmaking Masters, Italy, the 6th Kochi triennial exhibition of prints, Japan; the IV Novosibirsk International Biennial of Contemporary Graphic Art; Russia, the 5th British International Miniature Print Exhibition, UK; 12th International Print Biennial, Bulgaria; the Boston Printmakers 2003 North American Print Exhibition; Los Angeles Printmaking Society 18th National Exhibition, California. Souto has taught workshops and has been a visiting artist in the US and abroad including Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Colorado; the Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela; American University in Cairo, Egypt; Academy of Fine Art Helsinki, Finland; University of Texas, Austin; Museo Grabado, Zacatecas, Mexico, Columbus College of Art and Design. Souto has received many awards and grants and his work is in many important public and private collections in the US and abroad. Souto He is the director of the School of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Caroline Durieux's "Survivor" is a pencil-signed lithograph created in 1947 in an edition of 20. It is illustrated in Carl Zigrosser's book on the artist published in 1949.

"An extra-terrestrial spotlight falls on this battered subhuman figure; he does not look directly into the light but away from it, raising his hand to it like a beggar. The worn pads on his hands and knees shows that he has walked on them, like an animal, for a long time. There is nothing to suggest that he can stand. The beam of light looks cold, machine like, impersonal. Scornful satire marks the limit of comedy for '. . . there is nothing funny about scorn which comes round again almost to the attitude of divine comedy.'

Caroline Durieux created the technique (electron print) used in the depiction of "Morning".e. This is only one of 5 impressions. Some have theorized that the image is close to that of the artist's brother, Professor Charles Durieux.
In the electron print technique, radioactive isotopes are mixed with printing ink. A drawing is made and exposed face-to-face to paper coated with a radio-sensitized substance. The paper is then developed and produces an exact image of the original drawing.
“The image is transferred from the radioactive drawing to the sensitized paper by invisible beta rays,” says Dr. Wheeler. “Since beta rays are electrons, we named the process Electron Printing.”
