Printed on archival Arches paper 100% acid free paper. Portrait of Liz presents a sensitive realistic portrait of a seated dark haired young woman wearing a 1970's boho style tunic with a chevron zigzag design adorning the front, medallion necklace, blue jeans, and wild free, tousled fluffy hairstyle.

Soyer is best known for picturing poverty stricken victims of the Great Depression in New York City, also for creating images of everyday urban life and of the nude female body.
Artist statement: “I painted only what I saw in my neighborhood in New York City which I call my country…New York
and I are a part of one another.”
Raphael Soyer (1899 – 1987) painter, lithographer, and teacher, was born on December 15, 1899, in Borisoglebsk, Tombov, Russia and is best known for his compassionate, naturalistic depictions of urban subjects. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, American Academy of Arts and Letters, American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, Artists Congress, and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Soyer taught at the Art Students League in New York. Working in oil or lithography, he was an American Scene artist who championed realism and his work portrays the daily life of New Yorkers. Historically, Soyer is associated with the social realist artists of the 1930s, whose art championed the cause of social justice.
