Stella Harlos was both an artist and a teacher in Wisconsin, well known for her work in painting, ceramics, weaving, and printmaking. Her art is described as being whimsical and vivid, painted realistically but with impressionistic influences. She joined other Wisconsin artists to create Wisconsin’s own special regional style. Her work captured her love of small towns, open farm lands, woods and shorelines, and through it she expressed the values and virtues of grassroots America. She also spent time in Mexico, which was yet another backdrop for her paintings.
Born in Milwaukee,Wisconsin, Harlos studied under some prominent Wisconsin artists: Gustave Moeller at the Milwaukee State Teachers College, Gerrit V. Sinclair at the Layton School of Art, and Kenneth Weber in Hollywood, California. In addition to being an artist, she also taught at the Layton School of Art (1926-1936, starting their ceramics program); Francis Parker School of Arts and Crafts (1923-1924), and Milwaukee Downer College (1930). Harlos was also a member of the Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors and the Works Projects Administration, helping to organize the first art rental gallery in the country. She painted a WPA post office mural, Land of Wood and Lakes, in Hayward, Wisconsin, and won many awards for her artistic excellence. Her work is in numerous collections, including the City of Milwaukee and the West Bend Art Museum’s Permanent Art Collections.

Marie Laurencin (October 31, 1883 - June 8, 1956) was a French painter and printmaker. Laurencin was born in Paris, where she was raised by her mother and lived much of her life. At 18, she studied porcelain painting in Sèvres. She then returned to Paris and continued her art education at the Académie Humbert, where she changed her focus to oil painting.
During the early years of the 20th century, Laurencin was an important figure in the Parisian avant-garde. A member of both the circle of Pablo Picasso, and Cubists associated with the Section d'Or, such as Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Robert Delaunay, Henri le Fauconnier and Francis Picabia, exhibiting with them at the Salon des Indépendants (1910-1911) and the Salon d'Automne (1911-1912).
Laurencin's works include paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints. She is known as one of the few female Cubist painters, with Sonia Delaunay, Marie Vorobieff, and Franciska Clausen...

"Mes Petites Amies, Les Deux Sœurs" signed by Jacques Villon
By Jacques Villon
Located in Milwaukee, WI
This is an original drypoint and aquatint artwork by Jacques Villon. The artist signed in pencil on the lower right. As well as signed in plate at the top right of the image. This is a wonderful artwork of different intaglio processes being brought together in a beautiful almost seamless harmony. The thin pencil like markings and hair detailing are made using the Drypoint printmaking method. Whilst the color details around the girls are made using the Aquatint etching method. Jacques Villon shows his skills as a printmaker with the way these pieces line up perfectly and with how clean the rest of the plate is around the girls.
Catalogue Raisonne E101, pg. 66-67 (Ginestet & Pouillon. It depicts two young girls.

French painter, printmaker and illustrator. The oldest of three brothers who became major 20th-century artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp, he learnt engraving at the age of 16 from his maternal grandfather, Emile-Frédéric Nicolle (1830-94), a ship-broker who was also a much appreciated amateur artist. In January 1894, having completed his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, he was sent to study at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris, but within a year he was devoting most of his time to art, already contributing lithographs to Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Assiette au beurre. At this time he chose his pseudonym: Jack (subsequently Jacques) in homage to Alphonse Daudet’s novel Jack (1876) and Villon in appreciation of the 15th-century French poet François Villon...
