The Most Celebrated Grocer of the Chateau

18th century engraving from "Prints of the French Revolution, 1774-ca. 1840" titled "Epicier droguiste du château" published in Paris in 1792 by Villeneuve Graveur, rue Zacharie St. Severin, 21 Maison du Passage. A portrait is of Baron d'André, a parliamentarian from Aix, who opened a fancy grocery store in Paris. The artist uses iconographical elements, symbols, and the colors of the French Revolution of 1789 to create a fun satire of a French parliamentarian with an aristocratic title who, three years after the Revolution, became a Parisian purveyor of culinary delicacies. The portrait medallion is in blue, white, and red, enclosed in gingerbread, and topped by a rooster. Expertly framed with a 1 1/2 inch wide acid-free red mat, 5/8 inch wide wood moulding with a lightly antiqued gold-silver finish. Image size: 6 3/4 x 5 inches; outside frame size: 11 x 9 inches.
