Victor Clyde Forsythe
And They Thought We Couldn't Fight

c. 1917

$595

About

World War I Victory Liberty Loan poster by American artist, Clyde Forsythe (1885–1962) c. 1917. Mounted on acid-free medium and linen backing. Depicts a WWI infantryman with bandaged head, dressed in army fatigues, carrying a rifle over his right shoulder and German helmets in his left hand. He is on a battlefield. Above is a blue, cloud-filled sky. The Liberty Bond was sold in the United States to support the Allied cause in WWI, and was promoted in an aggressive advertising campaign with original art posters by by name artists. Subscribing to the bonds became a symbol of patriotic duty in the United States and introduced the idea of financial securities to many citizens for the first time.
