About the Item

This exquisite print is by the noted artist Patricia Tobacco Forrester (1940-2011). Forrester was noted for her watercolors and her printmaking. Here, she has created a print that looks a lot like a watercolor. The effect is achieved by using a method called poupee. A la poupée is an intaglio printmaking technique for using different ink colors of ink using a ball-shaped wad of fabric to apply the ink to a copperplate. Paper is printed through just one run in the press. The term a la poupée means "with a doll", which refers to the wad of fabric, shaped like a ball. The effect here is stunning. There is a density and saturation of color, and yet there are also subtle gradations of color, just like a watercolor. This print is titled “December Irises” in the lower left. In the lower center, it is described “a la poupee” and State . It is signed in the lower right, “Patricia Tobacco Forrester”. All in pencil. In the lower right is the “klp” blindstamp. The print measures 25 ½” x 17 ½” the plate and 29 ¾” x 22” the sheet. It is printed on BFK Rives paper. The print is in good never-framed condition. there is some light rippling along the lower edge and some very light creases in the right and left margins. I will ship it rolled in a large heavyweight tube. Patricia Tobacco graduated from Smith College with a B.A. (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1962 where she studied with Leonard Baskin, and from Yale University with a B.F.A. in 1963, and M.F.A. in 1965, where she studied with Chuck Close and Janet Fish.[1] She was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1967. In 1992 she was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member, and became a full Academician in 1994. She won a 2005 and 2009 Artist Grant from the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities.[2] Her works are in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, British Museum and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She lived from the sixties to 1981 in San Francisco, and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1982. She was married to Alex Forrester and Paul Ekman. Forrester died in Washington, D.C. on March 16, 2011

This artwork titled "Pomegranates" c.1970 is an original color aquatint on Japan paper by noted Indian artist Kaiko Moti, 1921-1989. It is hand signed and numbered XXII/LXXV in White pencil by the artist. The Size is 22 x 29.25 inches. Printed to the edge.
