About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Garcia Fons' for Pierre Garcia-Fons (French, 1928-2016), and inscribed lower left, 'Epr. d' Artist' (Epreuve d'Artist / Artist's Proof); also indistinctly inscribed, lower left, with title. Pierre Garcia-Fons left Spain during the Civil War and moved to France where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1950, he moved permanently to Paris, where he continued his studies at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere beside other painters of the second generation of the School of Paris including Clave, Buffet, Valls, and Arroyo. Garcia-Fons received many rewards, honors and scholarships throughout his career including the Travel Award from the State and the Antral Prize (1956), the Fénéon Prize (1958), the rank of Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters (2004), and the 2006 Grand Prix LG Baudry Taylor Foundation in Paris. Exhibiting widely and with success throughout the world including Caracas, Tokyo, throughout Europe and the U.S., Garcia-Fons has also participated in the Paris Biennale. His works are held in permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Barcelona, Besançon, Chartres, Jakarta, Perpignan, Bagnols-sur-Ceze, Yamagata, Osaka, Saint-Cyprien, Georges Pompidou, Sands 'Olonne, Saint-Denis, and the Abbey of Saint-Claude. Printed and published by Editions Press, San Francisco and with their blindstamp. Four prints by this artist, including this one. Painter, printmaker, illustrator, graphic designer and art director, Roy Carruthers was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and first studied at the Port Elizabeth Technical College Art School. From 1956, he worked as an art director and graphic designer in South Africa and, after 1960, in London. In 1968, he immigrated to the United States and worked in the advertising industry in New York. In 1974, Carruthers started his own graphic design firm while pursuing his career as a fine artist producing original paintings, drawings and etchings. His collaboration with Editions Press in San Francisco produced both sculpture and color lithographs, of which this work is a pristine example. He also maintained an academic career, teaching graphic techniques at Manhattan's School for the Visual Arts. Over the course of a distinguished career, Roy Carruthers exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators (1973). His work continued to be exhibited in South Africa and the United States and throughout Europe. In 1982, he returned to South Africa as a guest of the South African Government and was honored with a touring museum exhibition of his work.
