About the Item
The original 1895 poster by Steinlen, titled "De Mazas à Jérusalem par Zo d'Axa," offers a compelling glimpse into the cultural and political landscape of the era. Created by renowned artist Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, this poster captures the essence of a significant literary journey undertaken by Zo d'Axa, a prominent French anarchist and journalist.
Steinlen's artistic prowess shines through in the poster's composition, which likely served as a visual invitation to engage with Zo d'Axa's writings and ideas. The juxtaposition of the mundane (represented by the reference to Mazas, a prison in Paris) with the exotic and mystical (symbolized by Jerusalem) hints at the transformative nature of Zo d'Axa's narrative journey.
As a leading figure in the anarchist movement, Zo d'Axa's writings often challenged conventional norms and advocated for social change. The poster's imagery, coupled with its enigmatic title, suggests a narrative of rebellion, exploration, and perhaps spiritual awakening—a journey from confinement to liberation, both literal and metaphorical.
Steinlen's bold use of line and form, combined with his keen understanding of visual storytelling, makes this poster not just a promotional tool but a work of art in its own right. It stands as a testament to the power of art to provoke thought, spark curiosity, and inspire action in the pursuit of social justice and intellectual freedom.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen
Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was born in Lausanne in 1859. He was naturalized French in 1901. He was a painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist and sculptor. Before settling in Paris, he made a detour to Mulhouse where one of his uncles placed him in the studio of one of the best lithographers of the time. He settled definitively in Montmartre in 1881. Willette introduced him to his companions of the Cabaret du Chat-Noir animated by Rodolphe Salis. He met Toulouse-Lautrec, Forain, Léandre, Debussy, Eric Satie, Verlaine, Alphonse Allais and Aristide Bruant. He took part in the performances of the famous cabaret's shadow theater with animal stories and, most often, sequences featuring cats, for which he has a particular affection. The felines will appear throughout his activity as "parentheses" in a tormented work. There is, in this torment, the expression of no personal problem but a painful compassion for the lives of the exploited and marginal beings. He painted and drew idylls, balls and bastrings, workers, kids and gosselin, the poor, the little workers, girls and marlous. He sometimes made posters. In the most successful of them (« Le lait pur de la Vingeanne » et le « Fer Bravais ») he imposed, relevant or not, the presence of cats.
In 1901, Steinlen worked for L'Assiette au beurre , the most virulent satirical newspaper ever published and takes readily to target the institutions of the 3rd Republic.
His works are found in numerous Public Collections, such as Petit Palais in Geneva, Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

1917 original poster by Albert Besnard - 3e emprunt de la défense nationale
By Albert Besnard
Located in PARIS, FR
This 1917 original wartime propaganda poster, designed by Albert Besnard, was created to promote the Third National Defense Loan (3e Emprunt de la Défense Nationale) in France during World War I. As the war raged on, France needed financial support from its citizens to sustain military efforts, and posters like this played a crucial role in mobilizing the public to contribute to the war effort.
The composition is rich with symbolism and emotion. At the forefront, a serene yet resolute woman, draped in blue and white, holds an innocent child while extending an olive branch—a universal sign of peace. Behind her, a winged allegorical figure of Victory, clad in dramatic red robes, brandishes a sword and urges forward action. This juxtaposition between maternal protection and military force highlights the dual message of the poster: peace can only be achieved through victory.
The bold red typography reads:
"SOUSCRIVEZ POUR HÂTER LA PAIX PAR LA VICTOIRE" ("Subscribe to hasten peace through victory"), emphasizing the patriotic duty of citizens to invest in war bonds as a means of securing France’s triumph and eventual peace.
Created in the late phase of World War I, this poster reflects France’s determination and resilience. The use of dynamic lines, rich colors, and classical figures is characteristic of Besnard’s artistic style, blending Academic and Symbolist influences. This piece is not only a historical artifact but also a powerful example of propaganda art...
