About the Item
Japanese Garden: Orange, 1996
Tom Baldwin created the series of inkjet prints "Japanese Gardens" in 1996 on his computer, using then-nascent graphics technology to "paint" his images on the computer screen.
Recently graduated from Pasadena’s legendary Art Center College of Design, Tom Baldwin created the series of inkjet prints Japanese Gardens in 1996 on his computer, using then-nascent graphics technology to "paint" his images on the computer screen. Baldwin embraced this technology and its accompanying printing process not just for the speed and ease of their use, but because the artist could achieve the absolute flatness that the principles of modernism preached but ultimately--because of the limitations of their tools--never reached. These colorful, semi-abstracted views of Japanese temple landscapes subtly, but radically redefine picture space. Baldwin shifts fore and backgrounds, giving equal weight to skies and hillsides. Endowing a lowly bush with a vibrant purple or orange might cause it to pop out of proportion, but ultimately lends balance and stability to the work itself, in short, returning the composition to its original, harmonious whole in keeping with the subject matter. these original prints employ a color scheme that seems more reminiscent of 1980s Japanese pop art beer advertisements than a standard representation of an elegant Japanese garden. Several of these ground-breaking works from 1996 will be installed in the gallery alongside contemporary reinterpretations of the series the artist conceived in response to the gallery’s request to exhibit the original work. The recent works break with the artist’s earlier, off-key palette and incorporate more earth tones, an artistic decision that probably owes less to the general trend towards green marketing and more to Baldwin’s lifelong commitment to organic farming and sustainable permacultures.
Born on the island of Maui, Tom Baldwin lives and works on the Big Island of Hawaii. Japanese Gardens marks the artist’s first one-person exhibition in Paris and his first with the John Tevis gallery.

Meschac Gaba Inkjet Pigment Print Photograph African Conceptual Art Dollar Bill
Located in Surfside, FL
Meschac Gaba (Benin, 1961- )
Artist with American Inspiration: 4 World Financial Center, 2004, Meschac Gaba, pigmented inkjet print,
Hand signed, dated and inscribed '15 des 30 Artiste d'inspiration Americaine' verso.
Dimensions: approximately 17 1/2 x 42 1/2 in. (sheet), 19 x 44 in. (frame)
Meshac Gaba employs an intervention on an American dollar bill in Artist with American Inspiration: 4 World Financial Center, swapping out our stately eagle for his smiling face portrait. One of Gaba’s sculptures appears on the left as well.
Meschac Gaba (born 1961) is a Beninese conceptual artist based in Rotterdam and Cotonou. His installations of everyday objects whimsically juxtapose African and Western cultural identities and commerce. He is best known for The Museum of Contemporary African Art 1997–2002, an autobiographical 12-room installation acquired and displayed by the Tate Modern in 2013. He has also exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem and at the 2003 Venice Biennale.
Meshac Gaba was born in Cotonou, Benin, in 1961. He had drifted from his training as a painter until a bag of decommissioned money cut into confetti led him to make paintings with the material. 1981-1985 He was a student at the artist studio of Zossou Gratien, Cotonou, Benin.
Gaba became known for his installations of everyday objects that whimsically juxtapose African and Western cultural identities and commerce.
He held a residency at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie in 1996 for two years. In the absence of opportunities to display his work in the city, he set out over the next five years to make his own museum. This piece became his seminal The Museum of Contemporary African Art 1997–2002, which consists of 12 rooms (some based on museum function and others personal) filled with objects made by Gaba. Throughout the exhibition ran a vein of confessional narrative about the artist's art travails between Africa and Europe The wedding room, which he made while in love, holds mementos as museum artifacts from Gaba's wedding to the Dutch curator Alexandra van Dongen in 2000 at the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum. The Library room holds art...

Fabian Marcaccio (Born 1963 Rosario, Argentina) is an
Argentine-Italian born artist living and working in the United States
whose trans-genre works including "Paintants" and '"Draftants" have
been exhibited worldwide.
Marcaccio was born to a native Argentine mother and Italian father in
Rosario de Santa Fe where he later attended the University of
Philosophy. In 1985, at age 22, he moved to New York City, where he
continues to live and work. He has exhibited widely throughout
theUnited States, Europe and South America. In 2004, Kunstmuseum
Liechtenstein organized a retrospective of his work, the same year
that a solo exhibition was mounted at the Miami Art Museum. He
regularly exhibits with galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin,
Paris, Cologne and Barcelona. He has participated in numerous group
exhibitions, including; the 44th Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary
American Painting, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC in 1995,
Summer Projects at PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York in 2002, and
Documenta 11, Kassel, Germany in 2002. His multidisciplinary
collaborations include projects with the architect Greg Lynn that
resulted in an exhibition at the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus,
Ohio in 2001 and projects with composer Claudio Baroni creating
animated operas and a 2005 scored, paintball performance at Weston
Hall in Toronto, Canada.
Marcaccio’s work investigates whether the traditional medium of
painting can survive in the digital age. He has used printmaking
transfer techniques to make paintings and became well known in the
1990s for his manipulations of the conventions of painting. More
recently, he has relied upon digital and industrial techniques to
infuse his painting process with spatial and temporal concerns. The
results are environmental paintings, animations, and “Paintants” that
combine digitally manipulated imagery, sculptural form, and three
dimensionally painted surfaces.
On September 10, 2011 Marcaccio received the "Bernhard Heiliger Award
for Sculpture 2011" from the Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit.
