About the Item

Dorothy Mayhall's small sculptures are little monuments to be toyed with and handled. They should be picked up, fondled, and examined like a rock or shell you collect on the beach because of its unusual form and beautiful color. Artist's Statement When you make a small sculpture you are still faced by all of the same theoretical demands of a large scale work. You still have to create an overall image, and then deal with its mass and form, open and solid space, and how they flow in harmony or apart from one another, how geometric textures develop on surfaces- sometimes smooth, other times cubistic, straight lines versus organic ones. I like to think about inner spaces within seemingly solid forms- what goes on inside a mass and how insides flow out to surfaces. Nothing is really solid. There is space in form. The insides of voids are beautiful when they are bright and energetic, full of potential power, life, and promise. Outer surfaces become subdued at times as gravity eats at them. Biography Dorothy (Dottie) Mayhall 1925 - 1995 Student, artist, teacher, soldier, museum director - whatever Dottie did, she never strayed too far from her main focus of art. Equipped with a MFA in Sculpture and Painting, and MA in Art History, and a year at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar. Dottie taught art at the University of Nebraska, her alma mater. In order to add a little more excitement to her life she entered the Women's Army Corps during the late '50s. As a 2nd lieutenant, she was Chrif of the Visual Arts Training Center at Ft. Lee, VA. A second tour of duty as a 1st lieutenant took her to Japan. Once released from active duty in the Army, Dottie moved to New York where the "art action" was and began working at MOMA, building her contacts among artists and gallerists. She moved into becoming a museum director and was the first director at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art and the Storm King Center for Art, and was the director of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center at the time of her untimely death in 1995. Dottie championed the work of women artists and younger artists. She was a mentor of the owner of ODETTA gallery and offered her her first museum exhibition as a fledgling curator in 1995. Dottie's work was represented by Sachs Gallery in NYC and PMW Gallery in Stamford, CT.
