He has studied privately with Julie Connell, Jan Daniels, Michele Faia, Elle Fielder, Sal Pecoraro, Susan Stover, and Chris Volpe. Artist’s Statement: “My painting and artistic expression opens the doorway into an unconscious and creative world, where an uninhibited expression can take place, as one becomes immersed without the perception of time. Painting and design started it. From the beginning the process of transforming materials into art has struck me as a magical alchemy and, over the years, that mysterious process has had its hold on me, leading me from hobby to art. The creative process fills me with a sense of wonder and has proven a most amenable vehicle for transforming inner vision to outer reality. I paint from the inside out. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious is the region of the most fertile of creative soil. I love working with a full complement of colors but often find my design direction working within the narrow spectrum of black and white, shadow and light. Some of my early inspiration comes from the New York School and artists such as Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. Their ideas and techniques have helped to free my mind to explore areas of the unconscious that aren’t restricted by the world of right and wrong, good and bad. "Cocoon (1990)" by Suzanne Anker Suzanne Anker (born August 6, 1946) is an American visual artist and theorist. Considered a pioneer in Bio Art. She has been working at the relationship of art and the biological sciences for more than twenty five years. Her practice investigates the ways in which nature is being altered in the 21st century. Concerned with genetics, climate change, species extinction and toxic degradation, she calls attention to the beauty of life and the "necessity for enlightened thinking about nature’s 'tangled bank'.” Anker frequently works with "pre-defined and found materials"botanical specimens, medical museum artifacts, laboratory apparatus, microscopic images and geological specimens. Suzanne Anker was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 6, 1946. She earned a B.A. in Art from Brooklyn College of the City of New York and an M.F.A. from the University of Colorado in Boulder (1976). She also completed independent Studies with Ad Reinhardt (1966-1967) and studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School (1968). She lives with the artist Frank Gillette in Manhattan and East Hampton, NY. During the mid 70s to the mid 80s, Anker worked almost exclusively on sculptural handmade paper reliefs. She started papermaking in 1974 on the basis of reading Dard Hunter's and Claire Romano's books. In 1975 she worked with Garner Tullis at the Institute of Experimental Printmaking in Santa Cruz, California. The paper reliefs produced at his institute were exhibited at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York City in 1976.[ The same year, she participated in the North American Hand Papermaking exhibition organized by Richard Minsky at the Center for Book Arts in New York City. From a background as a printmaker, Anker initially worked with cast paper, made in latex molds. Subsequently, she incorporated limestone and fossils in her experiment with combinations of paper and stone. For her 1979 solo exhibition at the Walker Art Center, Anker installed large limestone planks that extended from the interior to the exterior of the gallery. The same year, she presented an installation of limestone and its residual chalk dust at P.S. 1’s "A Great Big Drawing Show" curated by Alanna Heiss with artists Vito Acconci, Alice Aycock, Frank Gillette, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Serra, and others. Suzanne Anker is considered "one of the pioneers in the broader field of art, science, and technology", particularly in the burgeoning field of Bio Art. In 1994, Suzanne Anker curated Gene Culture: Molecular Metaphor in Visual Art – one of the first art exhibitions on the subject of art and genetics – at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus in New York. The exhibition investigated "the ways in which genetic imaging operates as aesthetic signs". From 2004 to 2006, Suzanne Anker hosted twenty episodes of the Bio-Blurb Show, a 30-minute-long internet radio program originally broadcast on WPS1 Art Radio, in collaboration with MoMA. The show focused on the intersection of art and the biological sciences, and the ethical and aesthetic dimensions therein. It is currently archived on Alanna Heiss’ Clocktower Productions. In 2006, Anker co-curated the exhibition Neuroculture: Visual Art and the Brain, at the Westport Arts Center with Giovanni Frazzetto. The exhibition presented an investigation of aspects of the human brain, and its attendant representations. Suzanne Anker is the Chair of the School of Visual Arts (SVA)'s BFA Fine Arts Department in New York City (2005-present). She previously chaired the SVA BFA Art History Department (2000-2005). In 2011, Anker founded the SVA Bio Art Lab, the first Bio Art laboratory in a Fine Arts Department in the United States. The SVA Bio Art Lab is located in Chelsea, New York City and has been conceived as a place where "scientific tools and techniques become methodologies in art practice". Selected artworks Gene Pool Anker’s interests in the natural world extended her investigation into the microscopic domain of chromosomes and genes. Appropriating scientific images, she created Gene Pool in 1991, a body of work that includes suspended pigment on large vellum sheets and expansive sculptural arrays employing metallic fibers of stainless steel, copper, aluminum and bronze. Other works that reflect scientific representations of chromosomes include Chromosome Chart of Suzanne Anker –a presentation of her own DNA sequence as a self-portrait– and Cellular Script, in which she displays chromosome patterns as a kind of calligraphy. Biota (2011) is a sculptural installation by Suzanne Anker composed of porcelain sculptures and silver-leaf figurines. The porcelain objects are fabricated by immersing natural sea sponges into a mixture of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. Provenance: Estate of the artist Authenticity confirmed in writing At the beginning of the 1970s, Rolf Hans began designing objects for the first time. These were small sculptures that he assembled from iron pipes with round or square profiles. With these, he sought to create a new, three-dimensional reality of experience, parallel to his paintings, which he was creating at the same time. In 1987, Hans returned to the medium of sculpture. He no longer regarded the working process as conscious construction, but rather as allowing himself to be guided by what was already there. And as with his paintings, his objects now arose from an inner necessity, not to fill an intellectual vacuum. "This compulsion has had a hold on me for decades, and for a few years now I have been trying to appease it with the cycle 'Poesie der Dinge' (Poetry of Things). The intellectual climate was ripe." So Hans concentrated on working on the sculpture cycle in the last decade of his life. And as if in a frenzy, he drew on the new possibilities offered to him by the design of the objects: "The poetry of things grows, it swallows up all my time, many things are neglected, hardly any letters, the diary is largely silent, concert visits are limited to the essentials. A compulsion arises, and yet it began as a game, but experiments were always a serious matter that demanded the whole man. [...] The objects have crept into my rational mind, cautiously and unnoticed, claiming their place, taking it, becoming part of myself." "It's a difficult thing with art. Looking at your predecessors, you try to find your way, the spirit of the times and its aesthetics influence the direction, you know about the dissatisfaction in which you move. Now, in the midst of the 'poetry of things', there is a feeling of freedom, yet closely connected to much that came before. There is no program, only a title that allows each work its freedom." But despite the role models before his eyes, Hans succeeds from the outset in finding his own unique ways of expression with his object cycle. What connects him to Max Ernst, Brancusi, and Duchamp is solely the source material: found objects. These are very mundane things from everyday life—once necessary, useful, and practical items such as tools, utensils, and devices—that have been stripped of their function and now serve as a gateway to the artist's imagination. In this way, Hans strips things of their previous, traditional function or archaic purpose and transports them into a different, new reality in order to breathe new life into them. In doing so, he does not want to deny the found form without aestheticizing it. By making only minor changes to their 'innate' structure, signs of wear, and color, he seeks to emphasize their meaning and purpose as form and to redefine their inherent charisma. The objects are worked on, forced to reveal their unique characteristics in their struggle with the artist and to make new statements in connection with other objects. In this way, Hans presents the abstract symmetries of the wood and metal objects without any artificiality and places them on a pedestal in accordance with artistic tradition. Furthermore, he integrates the pedestal into the work. As the lowest component, the pedestal not only prepares the viewer for the sculpture, but also loosens, loosens, or strengthens its connection to the earth. By raising them up, he gives the sculptures a further life of their own, a second existence, so to speak, and also gives them a new identity with a new name. "They show their personality, some more, some less, as is the case in life, or in art." What they all have in common is their influence from the past into the here and now. In doing so, they reveal their original beauty and the mysticism that fires our imagination. However ambivalent the sculptures and objects by Rolf Hans may appear to us, they never do so in a loud or exalted manner. With their balanced and simple appearance, they quietly and calmly, but decisively, enter into contact with us. In an unsettling way, they repeatedly prompt us to ask questions: Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? They offer us no clues that might help us answer these questions. Instead, they give us all the more scope for associations and imagination. They appeal to our subconscious. They invite us to linger and meditate: it is the familiar beginning and the unconscious departure into the mysteries of creation.
