About the Item

This imposing metal sculpture by the renowned Quebecois artist, Marcel Barbeau dominates the landscape. This monumental piece, ‘paravents du rêve’ translates as ‘dream screens’. Barbeau, born in Montreal, was one of the first Canadian painters to embrace abstraction long before it became popular. In his remarkable seven-decade career (1925-1990) he created more than 4,000 artworks including painting, sculpture, sound art and public art. “It’s like a gift. The will disappears completely, making way for joy.” Marcel Barbeau This sculpture is the only large one of his that is privately available. Marcel’s widow, Ninon Gauthier, PhD, historienne de l'art, sociologue et critique d’art, considers it one of his best sculptures. Marcel Barbeau studied painting and sculpture at the École du Meuble in Montreal. Throughout his career, he received many awards and in1995, he was made a member of the Order of Canada.
