About the Item

Hans Van de Bovenkamp's abstract-figurative sculpture "Androgynous" is a subtly feminine piece with a sensuous balance of rounded and angular forms. This medium sized sculpture will imbue your space with a pleasant presence, intriguing from every angle. Van de Bovenkamp's work is inspired by myths, the collective consciousness, and subliminal learning. “I like dreams, myths and mythology," says the sculptor, who has been influenced by the work of Joseph Campbell, the cultural anthropologist. "A lot of my work is derived from ceremonial religious art." Van de Bovenkamp was born and raised in The Netherlands, where he studied architecture. Within ten years of moving to the US and graduating from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, he began showing his sculpture in New York, Houston, and several other states, and he quickly received recognition for his large-scale abstract works in bronze, stainless steel, painted steel, or aluminum. He received large commissions for corporate, private, and public collections as early as 1964, the year he received the Emily Lowe Memorial Award, and was featured in ten museum, embassy, and sculpture center shows. Today, Van de Bovenkamp’s sculpture is widely displayed in galleries throughout Europe and the US. A recently published, 160-page book spanning the artist’s 40-year career is available from Hudson Hills Press.

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions." Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide. "It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia

Pollès - Bronze Sculpture - Chrysolithe
Located in Collonge Bellerive, Geneve, CH
Pollès - Bronze Sculpture - Chrysolithe Bronze 3/4 Created in 2012, casted in 2013 22 x 10 x 13 cm Signed and Numbered BIOGRAPHY Pollès was born in Paris in 1945 Like Leonard de Vinci in an anatomical search of perfection, of representation of movement, with an almost scientifical or medical glance, Pollès holds the utmost passion of anatomy: he learns about the human body, the complicated hank of muscles, movements of members and all the bodily mechanics. That’s why in 1964 he starts medicine school and along side goes to the Charpentier Academy where he follows art lessons. In 1966, he encountered sculpture in London where he was invited by his friend Enzo Plazota. This final step teaching him all the bases of sculpture. Pollès then decides to go to live in Italy, in Carrare, an important art place. He moved in 1970 and settled in Pietrasanta where he still lives. His sculptures, by creating a vision of the moving being, polished and smoothed, break the pureness of aestheticism. He just knows one theme, one model: the female form. According to Pollès, this is the most beautiful one, the most harmonious one. “When we are looking at a feminine body, it is splendid, it is musical”. His love of women, the sensuality, the complexity, the shapes and passions, brought him to explore the female form. Since the beginning he has created a singularly stylized cubist form; this becoming his signature form. All are cast in bronze by Pollès himself and made in a series of four with one artist's proof. His masterliness of the patina is considered unparalleled. The world's recognition of his craft is evidenced by the many awards he has won, the unique places he has shown and the prestigious private collections he is in, including that of Princess Caroline of Monaco. Pollès was recently honored in an exhibition outside Paris, sponsored by the French Government, called “Sculptors From Rodin to The Present”. He was one of the few living sculptors to be so honored; the others include Abakanowicz, Arman, Saint-Phalle & Wesselmann. Maurice Rheims, a respected Art Critic, and a member of The French Academy, has said “I consider Pollès to be one of the outstanding sculptors of our time.” His show in the Bagatelle Gardens in Paris in 1998 was a major honor as he was one of only two artists who have ever been allowed to present their work in the Bagatelle. The other artist is Henry Moore. Main Exhibitions 2018 : Exposition Sculptures Monumentales – Place du Louvre, Paris 2001 : Le corps mis à nu: sculptures de Rodin à Vanessa Beecroft, Donjon de Vez...
