James Rosati
(Untitled) Abstract Steel Sculpture

Circa 1970

About

This graphic and sophisticated sculpture was realized by the celebrated Abstract Expressionist artist James Rosati in New York, circa 1970. Realized in patinated steel, in a java hue, the piece offers a rich variety organic forms- some geometric others, curvilinear- that intersect creating a dynamic and striking silhouette. Born outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rosati moved to New York in 1944, where he was a charter member of the Eighth Street Club (the Club) and the New York School of abstract expressionists. Rosati was among the participants in the 9th Street Art Exhibition and the subsequent Stable Gallery shows, and a friend of artists Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline. The influence of Rosati's contemporaries- such as de Kooning and Kline- is apparent in his work. It appears as a sculptural response to the same artistic issues that these painters were grappling with at the time. With figurative suggestions, the work evokes the same kind of verve and bold movement as a painter like de Kooning in a medium that tends to feel static and heavy. This is a first rate example of Rosati's practice that really showcases his aesthetic gifts. With its clean lines and distinctly modernist sensibility, this sculpture would be a wonderful addition to any interior, regardless of the style of interior. Rosati was awarded the Mr and Mrs Frank G. Logan Art Institute Prize for sculpture in 1962 and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1964. His work is included in many important private and institutional collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Albright Knox Gallery and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The work is in excellent vintage condition. American, circa 1970 Dimensions: 57"H X 18"D X 19"W Base: 30"H X 22"D X 22"W
