Max Bill Sculpture "Endless Loop from a Circular Ring II" 1958 - See Provenance

1958

About the Item

Max Bill "Endless Loop from a Circular Ring II" This work was conceived in 1947-1949 and executed in 1958 in gilded brass with a white marble base. This sculpture is very important as it was exhibited in the first Max Bill Solo Exhibition in the United States in New York City at the Staempfli Gallery, March 19 - April 13, 1963, as catalogue #20. Purchased from the Staempfli Gallery, NY, by Alfred and Anne Bromberg of Dallas, TX, and acquired from the Bromberg estate in 2024. Inscribed "Bill 47-49" to the stem of the loop Anne Bromberg was a respected art scholar who worked at the Dallas Museum of Art as a lecturer and educator and was their principal curator for nearly six decades. Alfred Bromberg was University Distinguished Professor of Law at the Dedman School of Law, Southern Methodist University, and a nationally recognized legal scholar. The mirror-polished gilded brass is in good condition and is free of dents and repairs. The mahogany pivoting display stand is not an original, integral part of the work but was designed by the Bromberg family to display the piece in their home and will be included with the sale. This is an extraordinary minimalist sculpture and is a historically significant work in the timeline of the artists' oeuvre. Endless Loop II was also displayed alongside the maquette for Harry Bertoia's Sunlit Straw at the Staempfli Gallery's 1964 Exhibition, "The Artist and the Architect." Included with the sale are copies of the supporting documents and provenance including the original bill of sale and correspondence between the artist, gallery, and original buyers. Max Bill was a Swiss artist, architect, and designer. His work is celebrated for its geometric precision and clarity, reflecting his Bauhaus training and his belief in the synthesis of art, science, and technology. Bill's contributions span various fields, including industrial design, graphic design, and sculpture, making him a versatile and influential figure in 20th-century modern art. Over the decades, Max Bill's works have been sold by prominent auction houses such as Sotheby's, Christie's, Bonhams, and Dorotheum. His pieces, ranging from paintings to sculptures, have commanded significant prices at auction and are in numerous permanent museum collections worldwide. The overall height including the stand is 57.75"

It depicts an open Torah. Original patina. Approx. dimensions: 7 in. H x 9 in. W x 8.5 in. D. Weight: 13.1 lbs. Modernist Judaica Sculpture Born Charna Barsky (Charna Ysabel or Isabel Rickey Barsky) in Chihuahua, Mexico, the future artist lived in Hermosillo and immigrated to Los Angeles when she was 11. She was educated at UCLA and Cal State L.A., she married furniture retailer David Rickey and explored art while raising their three daughters. Moving through phases in terra cotta, bronze, marble and aluminum, she found success later in life. Rickey became one of the original art teachers at Everywoman's Village, a pioneering learning center for women established by three housewives in Van Nuys in 1963. She also taught sculpture at the University of Judaism from 1965 to 1981. As Rickey became more successful, her sculptures were exhibited in such venues as Artspace Gallery in Woodland Hills and the Courtyard of Century Plaza Towers as part of a 1989 Sculpture Walk produced by the Los Angeles Arts Council. Her sculptures have also found their way into the private collections of such celebrities as Sharon Stone. Another of Rickey's international creations originally stood at Santa Monica College. In 1985, her 12-foot-high musical sculpture shaped like the Hebrew letter "shin" was moved to the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The free standing architectural Judaic aluminum work has strings that vibrate in the wind to produce sounds. Rickey also created art pieces for the city of Brea. They commissioned some amazing art pieces by Laddie John Dill, Walter Dusenbery, Woods Davy, Rod Kagan, Pol Bury, Niki de Saint Phalle, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Larry Bell, John Okulick...
