Two knots to the Heavens is a contemporary figurative bronze sculpture where Beatriz Gerenstein shows a figurine holding a long and tall golden-brown rope. In this sculpture, Gerenstein explores our intimate relationship with our inner world and with the material world that surrounds us. The material world is attractive, tempting. It is really within our reach; it is solid and clearly tangible. It offers immediate gratification. However, we are all aware that our relationship with the material, with things and especially with others has something of an illusion, fantasy or theatricality. The material world is always outside of us and, in its totality, is unattainable. Our relationship with ourselves, with our inner world, thoughts and feelings is more honest. On it, we are as we really are. However, the reality of this so-called spiritual world is doubtful. It is close but at the same time distant. We can not touch it, we just feel it. Does it exist? It requires us to work deep within ourselves to fully achieve and enjoy it, but it gives us peace, tranquility, and satisfaction, a delayed but sustainable gratification. What is the figurine doing? Is he trying to climb the rope? Does he want to drop it down? Is he clenching it, aware of the fragility of our spiritual world? Do we have to secure our nonmaterial life with two knots? Beatriz Gerenstein is a contemporary artist whose body of work explores the daily pleasures, anxieties, and mysteries of the human being.
