Curt Brill
Standing Pamela

2002

About the Item

This nude figurative sculpture, "Standing Pamela," stands with one hand on her hip and the other hand resting over the ponytail falling down her back. The bronze figure with dark patina is 20.25 x 7.5 x 4" and is attached to a 1.75 x 10 x 8" rectangular wooden base as shown. The signature, year, and edition number (2 of 12) are inscribed on the inside edge of the figure's left foot. Curt Brill aims to express movement, humor, and serenity in his figurative sculpture. He begins by making quick drawings as his models sit, stand, or lie down in relaxed, natural poses. Brill makes sure to retain the immediacy of these sketches as he renders them in three dimensions as clay maquettes, and then they are cast in bronze using the lost-wax process. In the forward to Brill's 2005 book, Peter S. Briggs described “the push of [Brill's] hand, the remnant impression of fingers, the shapes of his tools, [and] the changes in pressure of his arm" as the visible evidence of Brill's clay sculpting process, still seen in the textured surfaces of the finished bronzes. Briggs continues, "Stretched, twisted, exaggerated and relaxed, his sculptures… fix his anatomical forms in positions that range from ungainly to graceful.” The final bronzes are sculptures stripped of heroism, narrative, and romanticism. This realism, due in part to the artist's experience as a drug rehabilitation counselor and a professional in state-run mental institutions, strives to expose the beauty and grace found within human imperfections, not in spite of them. Brill chanced upon sculpture as a means of expression while taking a pottery class at Cornell University. After receiving a B.S. in Graphic and Product Design from the university, he embarked on a career as a sculptor and gained a national reputation for large-scale raku pottery. In 1980, however, he poured his first bronze and discovered a fascination with the medium that he has since made his own. Brill has shown widely throughout the United States and Japan. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at such venues as: the Amakusa Community Center (Japan), Macchi Community Center (Japan), Cornell University, Tokyo Museum of Art, and Tucson Museum of Art.

Jack Kerouac was born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1922, to French-Canadian parents. He won an athletic scholarship to Columbia University, where he met Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, but dropped out after one year after an argument with the football coach. He then became a merchant seaman all through World War II, with the idea of becoming a traveler and novelist in the tradition of Jack London and Thomas Wolfe. After Kerouac's stint in the Merchant Marines, he settled in New York and began his first novel, “The Town and the City”, which took about two years. His father died in 1946 and Jack lived with his mother, Gabrielle, to whom he was extremely devoted. He referred to her as Mémère, and she continued her work in a factory in order to support him while he was writing. During this time, he met a young would-be writer from Denver, Neal Cassady...

"Maxwell Street" wall sculpture
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Sandblasted carved glass, cast glass, bronze and wood. Steve Linn describes himself as a documentary sculptor, conducting meticulous research on each of his selected subjects and choosing which references to interpret for the piece he then creates. "I was born and raised in Chicago," Linn says, "and in 1956 before my 13th birthday, my father took me to Maxwell Street to buy me my first suit. This was a momentous occasion, not because I was getting a suit, but it was my introduction to the blues. Maxwell Street was the center of Jewish pushcart commerce and haberdashery emporiums, it was also where black blues musicians congregated, played, and thrived in harmony with their neighbors. My dad let me stay and listen that day and I became a life-long fan." The merchants provided electrical extension cords from their establishments to power the amplifiers of the musicians, and in return the musicians were an attraction to lure customers into the shops. Many famous blues musicians got their start on Maxwell Street having migrated to the city from the deep south: Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, and Howlin...
