About the Item

Evelyn Beatrice Longman was a trailblazing female artist getting major commissions at the very begining of the 20th century. Having lived in New York City, I used to walk by the life size version of this in Philip Johnson's ATT Building and it left me breathless every time. This classical bronze statue of a victorious and handsome young man is called "Victory" or "The Victor". It depicts an athletic young Greco- Roman man wearing cuirass and greaves is decorated with acanthus patterning. In a celebratory manner, he raises hands above his head. In his left hand, he holds traditional symbols of victory: oak leaves and a laurel wreath and is standing atop a globe or sphere and is attached to a circular black onyx base. . A similar version of this bronze is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was conceived as a larger work in 1903 in a monumental form for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1904. In 1908 there were smaller reductions. This later cast is one and is stunning with a rich beautiful bronze with shiny brown patina. Sotheby's Arcade Paintings, 2006 - Incribed No 20 © Evelyn B. Longman and dated 1908 on the spherical base. inscribed Roman Bronze Works N.Y. on the rim of the base. The copyright symbol © was introduced in the United States in section 18 of the Copyright Act of 1909 - This cast came after 1909. Best known for sculpting the "Genius of Electricity" (originally called the "Spirit of Communication" and informally known as the Golden Boy) atop the AT&T Building on Broadway in Manhattan, the sculptor Evelyn Beatrice Longman was the first woman sculptor to be elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1919. She worked as an assistant to Daniel Chester French ( the sculptor of Abraham Lincoln /Lincoln Memorial in Washington D. C. Large Original French Art Deco Bronze of a Semi-Nude Male Athlete by Le Faguays
By Pierre Le Faguays
Located in New York City, NY
Pierre Le Faguays (1892-1962) An Impressive and very large 43" high French Art Deco bronze figure of a young athletic man, adorned in scanty attire, almost nude, standing proudly atop a lofty and stylized rocky plinth. His stance exudes strength and confidence as he balances himself gracefully. With arms outstretched in a fluid movement, the sculptor portrays a sense of dynamic energy and prowess. Beautifully cast in a dark green, brown /black variegated patina. In his elevated grasp, the man holds a laurel wreath, raised high above his head. This symbol of victory and triumph represents the pinnacle of achievement. Through the artists eyes, it further conveys the athlete's exceptional skill and dedication to his craft. The artist's attention to detail and skillful execution breathe life into the sculpture, capturing the essence of athleticism and the human form. This remarkable bronze figure epitomizes the grace, power, and triumphant spirit of Olympic competition. It stands as a testament to the artistic brilliance and mastery of Pierre Le Faguays and serves as a timeless tribute to the pursuit of excellence in art as well as in sports. In 1927, he received a prestigious medal of honor for his exceptional work. A close companion of Max Le Verrier, Pierre collaborated extensively with the Le Verrier foundry, which produced numerous pieces of his art. In addition to his given name, he also employed two pseudonyms, Fayral and Guerbe, which were derived from the surnames of his mother and wife respectively. As a leading sculptor, Pierre's creations earned consistent praise for their exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to anatomical precision. His artistic endeavors extended beyond sculpture, as he also designed pieces for Goldscheider in Paris, working under the label "La Stele." Pierre's versatility encompassed various mediums, including ivory, bronze, spelter, stone, wood, alabaster, and ceramics. Notably, he received artistic education alongside his friend Max Le Verrier, studying together at the Beaux Arts in Geneva. Throughout their lives, Pierre maintained strong friendships with both Marcel Bouraine and Max Le Verrier, with the latter's foundry being instrumental in producing many of Le Faguays' statues. The bond formed...

Located in New York, US
Our magnificent bronze, entitled Der Gladiator, depicting a Roman gladiator preparing to fight was modeled by the German artist, Heinrich Baucke (1875-1915). Mounted to a green variegated marble plinth measuring 23 by 15 inches and with an overall height of 39 inches. Signed on the base with the stamped mark of the foundry, DUSSELDORFER BRONCEGIESSEREI G.m.b.H. The artist enjoyed a prestigious career.  According to the Benezit, Baucke studied under Karl Janssen at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts.  In 1903 Baucke moved to Berlin and executed several commissions for Kaiser Wilhelm II including a major work at the Royal Palace in Berlin (known since the end of the monarchy in 1918 as the Berlin Palace) and supervision of the development of the Schlossplatz palace square.  Commissions included the Monument to William I at Rotthausen, the bronze of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia at the town hall in Elberfeld, a statue of King Frederick I, a stone statue of Maurice of Nassau and marble busts of Helmuth von Moltke, Chief of the German General Staff, and German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck...
