About the Item

Georges GARDET (1863-1939) Two young Lions Bronze group with a nuanced dark brown patina Signed on the base " G. Gardet " Cast by " Siot-Paris " (with the foundry mark) France circa 1900 height 37,5 cm length 51 cm width 23cm Biography : Georges Gardet (1863-1939) was a French sculptor. He took classes at the Fine arts School in Paris in the workshops of Aimé Millet and Emmanuel Frémiet. He revealed himself endowed with great skill in the realization of animal subjects that remained his favorite themes. Georges Gardet took part in the Paris Salon at the age of twenty in 1883 and won his first success in 1891 with his animal group "Drama in the desert", whose bronze was then presented in Montsouris Gardens in Paris. His talent attracted him many commissions from amateurs who wished to keep effigies of their pets or decorate the gardens and parks of their homes. Georges Gardet produced marbles as well as plasters often cast into bronze. Some of his works were edited in porcelain biscuit by the Sèvres Manufacture. He was promoted to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1900, the year when his two "Lion with the Child" adorned Alexandre III Bridge in Paris. He was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts and the Society of French Artists.
