About the Item
The work “North South East West” continues the style characteristics of the sweater series, transforming the four major guardians in traditional religious themes into the shape of contemporary young people’s street culture, filling the inner surface of the sweater hat with four different colors, which has a sense of fashion. Through the borrowing of religious terminology, the response of real life and historical memory is activated, forming a cross-temporal dialogue between traditional and contemporary, and creating a cultural metaphor with great visual effects and conceptual conflicts in an artistic way.
作品《风调⾬顺》延续卫衣系列作品的风格特征，将传统宗教题材中的四大护法转换成当代年轻人街头文化的造型，用四种不同颜色填涂卫衣帽子的内面，既具时尚感，又通过宗教术语的借用激活了现实生活与历史记忆的回应，构成传统与当代的跨时空对话，以艺术的方式创造了一种极具视觉效果和观念对撞的文化隐喻。
“I poured all my personal emotions into this sweater-wearing character. In order not to affect the temperament with more information, I subtracted the character's face and completed the character with a jumpsuit and hoodie. Because of the characters I create, I use their actions and gestures to suggest a particular state and a power expressed by the characters themselves.” ~ Huang Yulong

Huang Yulong
Huang Yulong was born in 1983 in Anhui Province, China. In 2007 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in Jiangxi Province. As one of the new generation of Chinese artists and part of the ‘post-80s generation’ and ‘only child’ generation, Huang is strongly influenced by the phenomenon of foreign culture in China, which he combines with his fascination with pottery and the material world. Huang is best known for his sculptures of Buddhas in hoodies, displaying an exchange of Eastern tradition and Western contemporary style. He was selected by “Complex” as “25 Contemporary Chinese Artists You Need to Know” in 2013. His sculptures have been exhibited at Niubi Newbie Kids II, at Schoeni Gallery, Hong Kong; “Zeitgeist” Huang Yulong’s Solo Exhibition at Himalayas Art Museum, Shanghai, China; Chinese Artist / Marseille Artist at Marseilles, France; The 4th International Contemporary Art Exhibition at Gwangju Biennale Korea, Art Beijing Art Fair at Beijing, China and etc. He also held his first solo exhibition “NULL” in Hong Kong in 2015.
